Being a Proper Sea Dog, Friday, Period 3 [Session 2]

Hook's time spent reading the Danger Shop instructions had paid off. Today's class met inside that wonderous room of programmable places, where Hook had created a simple replica of a three masted vessel.

He had a series of handouts for the students, showing illustrations of various knots.

"Today we're going over that staple of seamanship," Hook declared, after the handouts were passed among the students. "Knots. Rope is very important, very important indeed for the average ship. And before we can go into things such as rigging and nets and so forth, you need to learn the basic knots. For practice today, and for a bit of fun, we're going to split into pairs. You'll practice tying your partner to something on the ship. A mast, the wheel, the anchor, something. The idea is to use a knot that you think will hold them tightly. The partner then, of course, is to try and break free. If your partner fails to break free, then bravo. Midway through the time of the class, please untie your partner if they've not already obtained their freedom, then switch places as to who is being tied to what."

Hook chuckled. "And no, no one is allowed to tie me to anything."

He snapped his fingers. "Chop chop, get to it, that's a good crew. It's all very self explanatory. Yo ho and all that."

When the class broke up for the activity, Nico snagged a piece of rope and meandered over to where Jason was being completely obvious with his looks. "I don't suppose you're in need of practice tying people up, huh?"

"It just so happens that I might be needing that skill in the future," Jason said, holding back the leer that would accompany that comment if they weren't in class. "Would you be willing to help me practice?"

"My wrists are looking kinda free," Nico teased, stuffing one end of his rope in a pocket for safe keeping before raising his hands. "It's too bad there's no requirement you catch me first."

"So I can practice catching you like a criminal? I get enough of that on real criminals," Jason said. "Is there a particular part of the boat you'd prefer to be tied to?" He figured he was being nice, giving Nico a choice.

"I don't know, did you want this to be easy or hard?" Nico shrugged. "I mean, there's a whole lot of potential positions..."

"I guess it depends on whether or not you want a shot of getting free," Jason said, resolutely not thinking about positions.

Jason was no fun, but Nico just looked at him curiously. "Why would I want to get free?"

"The teacher said you should try to get free. Unless you don't want to," Jason said, smirking a little more now.

"Oh. It's good you're around 'cause I sure wasn't listening when he said that." Or when he said much of anything. And since Jason was being so very good and proper... "So, how do you want me?"

"Oh, I have so many class-inappropriate answers for that," Jason said. "I could tie you to one of the masts. That would probably be kind of easy."

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"I promise not to take offense to your inappropriate answers," Nico teased, grabbing for Jason's wrist with a cold hand, intending to lead him over to mast free of students. "Or to you making this easy for me."

Jason let himself be led, wishing he could warm Nico's hands up without people noticing. When they got to the mast, he looked at it and smiled with satisfaction. "Yeah, this'll definitely work," he said with a smile.

"Am I wrapping around this thing?" Nico asked, eyes looking over the mast in amusement. "I've never really been tied to a pole. At least, not that I remember."
dontvotemeout: (happy: uncertain smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Put your back to it, with your hands behind you," Jason said. "I'm going to tie you up that way." Not that he'd ever given thought to tying Nico to a pole or anything. "I've never tied someone to a pole, so I think we're even."

"Sounds like you've thought about this before," Nico pointed out while assuming the position described. He was really trying not to hope Jason reached around him to tie this knot.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

"I...might have," Jason said. As much as he would have liked to have stood in front of Nico and reach around him, it was a lot easier to move behind him to take hold of his wrists and bring them together. That still allowed him to lean close to Nico though, so he could quietly say, "You know I have."

Allowing his wrists to be tied was the easy part of this activity. Not saying terrifically dirty things to Jason was so the tricky part. "It's too bad about the boat full of people, huh?"
dontvotemeout: (happy: uncertain smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, my thoughts don't usually involve an audience," Jason said, rubbing Nico's hands a little to warm them up before slipping the rope around his wrists and tying them together. He tried to make the rope and knots loose enough that Nico wouldn't get hurt, but tight enough that he couldn't get out. Nico was right, there wasn't a good reason for that for them.

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Mine don't usually involve you standing around while I struggle to get free," Nico joked, trying to feel how to best approach this whole untying a knot thing without being able to see it or really get his fingers on the rope. "But you can keep me from zoning out on this job, I guess."
dontvotemeout: (happy: small smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Would you really zone out tied up like this?" Jason asked, coming back around to face Nico, and grabbing the rope that Nico had put in his pocket along the way.

"Eh, if there was no one to talk to me--hey, that's my rope!" Yeah, he was probably never going to set himself free. It was frustrating trying to wriggle his wrists against the rope without looking.

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Not anymore it's not," Jason said, moving to stand directly in front of Nico to tie the rope around Nico's waist and the mast. "Looks like it's mine now."

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nico frowned down at the shorter boy, his wrists rubbing fruitlessly against the well-tied rope. "You realize I have no chance of getting free, right? This is just adding insult to injury."
dontvotemeout: (happy: uncertain smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not insulting. I'm trying to get more practice in," Jason said, trying to look as innocent as possible. This time, he tied the knot in front of Nico, using a different knot than the one around his wrists. At least this way, there was a sliver of truth in the "practice" idea.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure, practice," Nico repeated, unbelieving as he watched Jason at work. "If you're going to practice on that rope, maybe you should share some hero tips at how to get out of this other one?"
