Being a Proper Sea Dog, Friday, Period 3 [Session 2]

Hook's time spent reading the Danger Shop instructions had paid off. Today's class met inside that wonderous room of programmable places, where Hook had created a simple replica of a three masted vessel.

He had a series of handouts for the students, showing illustrations of various knots.

"Today we're going over that staple of seamanship," Hook declared, after the handouts were passed among the students. "Knots. Rope is very important, very important indeed for the average ship. And before we can go into things such as rigging and nets and so forth, you need to learn the basic knots. For practice today, and for a bit of fun, we're going to split into pairs. You'll practice tying your partner to something on the ship. A mast, the wheel, the anchor, something. The idea is to use a knot that you think will hold them tightly. The partner then, of course, is to try and break free. If your partner fails to break free, then bravo. Midway through the time of the class, please untie your partner if they've not already obtained their freedom, then switch places as to who is being tied to what."

Hook chuckled. "And no, no one is allowed to tie me to anything."

He snapped his fingers. "Chop chop, get to it, that's a good crew. It's all very self explanatory. Yo ho and all that."

"Sounds like you've thought about this before," Nico pointed out while assuming the position described. He was really trying not to hope Jason reached around him to tie this knot.

"I...might have," Jason said. As much as he would have liked to have stood in front of Nico and reach around him, it was a lot easier to move behind him to take hold of his wrists and bring them together. That still allowed him to lean close to Nico though, so he could quietly say, "You know I have."

Allowing his wrists to be tied was the easy part of this activity. Not saying terrifically dirty things to Jason was so the tricky part. "It's too bad about the boat full of people, huh?"

"Yeah, my thoughts don't usually involve an audience," Jason said, rubbing Nico's hands a little to warm them up before slipping the rope around his wrists and tying them together. He tried to make the rope and knots loose enough that Nico wouldn't get hurt, but tight enough that he couldn't get out. Nico was right, there wasn't a good reason for that for them.

"Mine don't usually involve you standing around while I struggle to get free," Nico joked, trying to feel how to best approach this whole untying a knot thing without being able to see it or really get his fingers on the rope. "But you can keep me from zoning out on this job, I guess."

"Would you really zone out tied up like this?" Jason asked, coming back around to face Nico, and grabbing the rope that Nico had put in his pocket along the way.

"Eh, if there was no one to talk to me--hey, that's my rope!" Yeah, he was probably never going to set himself free. It was frustrating trying to wriggle his wrists against the rope without looking.

"Not anymore it's not," Jason said, moving to stand directly in front of Nico to tie the rope around Nico's waist and the mast. "Looks like it's mine now."

Nico frowned down at the shorter boy, his wrists rubbing fruitlessly against the well-tied rope. "You realize I have no chance of getting free, right? This is just adding insult to injury."

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not insulting. I'm trying to get more practice in," Jason said, trying to look as innocent as possible. This time, he tied the knot in front of Nico, using a different knot than the one around his wrists. At least this way, there was a sliver of truth in the "practice" idea.

"Sure, practice," Nico repeated, unbelieving as he watched Jason at work. "If you're going to practice on that rope, maybe you should share some hero tips at how to get out of this other one?"

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

"Well, I usually have a blade stashed somewhere I can reach it, so I'd try to get to it to cut the rope," Jason said. "Or, I'd try to twist to see if I could loosen the ropes, if they were tied poorly. But that would hurt, so don't do that."

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't have anything on you now, do you?" Nico checked, ignoring Jason's warning not to twist his wrists painfully to see if he could get the ropes to give a little.

"Nope. I don't usually bring weapons to class," Jason said. "I guess you might have to stay like this until I free you."

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
"And what do I need to do to convince you to free me?" Hey, it was a better tactic than making his skin completely raw from rope burn. The teacher might approve.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmmm, that's a good question," Jason said, getting a little quieter so only Nico could hear him. "It would probably be mean to make you say 'please' here, wouldn't it?"

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Completely mean." Nico felt his face warming at Jason's suggestion, but still he leaned as close as he was able and met the other boy's quiet tones. "Please Jay?"
dontvotemeout: (happy: smug smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Jason grinned, trying not to get too red himself. "Have I told you that I like it when you call me that?"

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I think I figured that out." Given his response to it and all. Nico pressed his stomach against the rope. "Did my please work or am I begging now?"
dontvotemeout: (happy: uncertain smile)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Jason laughed. "Yeah, it worked," he said, untying the rope from around his stomach. Of course he wasn't going to do his wrists first.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"No need to hurry," Nico commented, waiting to be set free. "I don't have anywhere to be."
dontvotemeout: (happy: laughing)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, sure, now you're not in a rush," Jason said, taking his time then to roll the rope back up so it wouldn't get knotted up on its own.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he was completely impatient, just saying the opposite to tease Jason. "How could I be? I know how slow you are with these things."
dontvotemeout: (happy: laughing)

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[personal profile] dontvotemeout 2011-01-15 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not slow. You just don't have an ounce of patience," Jason said, moving back around behind Nico.

Re: Activity: Practice Knots!

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't have to be patient if you were faster," he added. "And you should know I have patience when it matters." It just didn't often seem to matter.
