Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables had been set up further out on the lawn, away from the school building. The bonfires were going strong, and there was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves. Assuming they weren't too busy still trying to figure this place out.

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Bruce was actually fairly excited to be at the picnic since it represented a return to constant learning and activity and not merely biding his time. Granted, this being Bruce, his excitement was represented by a small smile and not merely sticking to the edges of the picnic while he drank his coffee.

Additionally, Bruce was starting to enjoy the game of 'who here has met me in their future/world?' that often seemed to crop up at these things. That's why he was actively watching for any looks of surprise now.

Momoko tapped Bruce on his shoulder. She had a bone to pick with her former TA. Forget that she hadn't spoken much to him in the time they'd been in classes together, this was important!

"Roy said you fought a giant robot without me!" That made pretty Japanese fangirls SAD, Bruce!

"Momoko," Bruce greeted as he turned around. "To be fair, I didn't go into it expecting to fight a giant robot. If I did, I would have been better armed." Because carrying a belt filled with projectiles and explosives wasn't quite good enough for him.

"Why? Is robot fighting a hobby of yours?"

"It's hard to be prepared for robots; they're all totally different." She flashed a V-sign at him. "Nope! It's my job! I do it a lot back home. Mojo Jojo loves to build them and try to destroy the town and other stuff. What kind was it? A mecha, a mobile suit, a droid...? And where was it? I totally didn't see it or I would have come to help!"

"It was in the labyrinth to the goblin city we had to deal with a few weeks ago," Bruce explained. "I suppose it would be a mecha with two goblins inside of it. A few of us did a number on it, but it was Professor Solo who finished it off."

"What kind of a job has you fighting robots constantly?" Besides 'robot fighter,' obviously.

"It was in the labyrinth?!?!" Momoko's look of disappointment was impressive. "I was in there and never saw it! So mean!"

"Stupid magic." She sighed, then winked and struck a pose. "I'm a superhero; I fight monsters that attack. With my team, of course."

"I didn't realize that," Bruce said. Mainly because he hadn't talked to Momoko much, no. It was the one real hole in his intelligence gathering system. Too many people had special information and he had trouble getting to them all. "Were your abilities still working that week? I know that a lot of people were having trouble with that."

She frowned. "They were, but I totally don't fight well against magic. I mean, if someone is attacking me with stuff using magic, I'm okay, but not when it's stuff like getting lost or walls growing where they're not supposed to."

And here was the part she really didn't care for. "I've totally got to train for that and more hand-to-hand fighting, this semester if I'm going to be a better hero." She hated training.

"Are you taking any of the fight-related classes? Because that's an easy way to get some training in," Bruce noted.

And yes, he was even counting the Pacifism class as a fight-related class. Knowing how to not fight could be just as important as knowing how to fight.

"I am!" She nodded, eagerly. "I'm taking the 'What Not To Do' class and 'Teamwork' and 'Fighting With Powers'! But I'm totally going to have to find someone to help with the other stuff. Unless the Powers class includes magic."

"What about you? You said you wished you were better armed... Do you fight robots at home, too?"

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
"That was the first robot I've ever fought, giant or otherwise," Bruce said. "But I can't say for sure it's something I'll never do again, but it'll probably only be for fun." HARDAC would disagree with Bruce if it existed yet.

"There are a few students who use magic around here. You might be able to check in with them and see if they can give you any help."

"Mmm! I can ask Karla, or Leda. But I don't know if they have experience fighting with magic, you know? And Karla and I got in trouble once for pretending to fight in the park. I really need to talk to a teacher first, I think."

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Bruce took a quick glance around before leaning in and whispering, "Use one of the abandoned warehouses. You should be able to find a way in. They're relatively isolated and discreet."

Then he straightened up and said, "But yes, checking with a teacher is probably the proper starting point. Who's teaching the powers class?"

"Ah! I never thought of that!" The park, by the way? Not a good choice. "I'll totally try that next time! Awesome idea!"

Although now Momoko was wondering what he was doing that he knew that.

"I think it's Centurion? I'm not totally sure. I'd have taken the class no matter who it was."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
It took Bruce a moment to put that together - he didn't remember seeing that name anywhere, but he did know of a teacher who knew a thing or two about Centurions - and said, "Maximus? I don't know how much he knows about magic specifically, but he definitely knows fighting. I'm sure he can help."

"Ah! Sorry! That's his name, yes! I had a class with him before and he said we were to call him Centurion instead of teacher. He's really good with weapons and strategy and running. He really likes running." Oh, she'd forgotten that about him. Was this class going to be all running, too?

"I wonder if magic counts as a power?"

Not if it wasn't a power, silly.

"So, why aren't you taking that class if you're going to be fighting at home? Do things not have powers where you're from?"

"Well, I'm not really planning on fighting anything back home. If something happens, I'd like to defend myself, but that's mainly against normal crime," Bruce said. "I mean, Gotham's a city of mobsters and thieves right now, not of flying people with super strength."

The key words were 'right now.' He had some knowledge that it would change in time, but he could prepare for that later. He needed to build the strongest foundation possible first.

Momoko stared at him.

"GOTHAM?!?"

How had she not known he was from Gotham? She totally had to watch what she said, now! At least until she talked to Dinah again. Or Roy. If Roy was even talking to her anymore.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
"You're familiar with it," Bruce stated in an even voice. "It doesn't exist in your world, does it?"

If it got that kind of reaction from her, but she was unfamiliar with the name 'Bruce Wayne,' it seemed unlikely.

But if she was familiar with the name 'Wayne' from, say, a certain manor, it was entirely possible that a person with all of that information might realize that Bruce was one of those Waynes.

Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. How much could she say?

"No? At least, not that I've ever heard of, but I've been there? I have, uhm, other friends from there. I totally didn't know you were, too!"

Momoko was busy running through her conversations with Dinah and trying to remember if she'd mentioned Bruce... Ah!

"EH? WAYNE?!" As in the Wayne Foundation, Wayne Towers, Wayne Manor (with the comfy princess bedrooms and Mr Alfred)... Oh, now she REALLY needed to talk to Dinah.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2011]

[identity profile] willbethenight.livejournal.com 2011-01-03 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
She mentioned Roy, so that was one. He seemed to know a lot, but Bruce was confident he wouldn't say anything. Raven, Zatanna, and Hayley didn't know anything relevant. He had no clue how much Jason might or might not know. Dinah was far into into his future and seemed fairly familiar with the Wayne legacy. If they were friends, there was really no telling how much Momoko could know just based on the historical record of the time.

"Yes, I'm that Bruce Wayne," Bruce said maintaining his even tone. "And I'm from a different version of Gotham, apparently years before anyone else, so the Gotham I know is probably a lot different than the one you know."

It was probably up to interpretation if the next statement was a request, a plea, or a threat, but regardless, Bruce felt the basic point would be clear if he lowered his voice just a tiny bit. "I'd appreciate it if we could keep it that way. I want my future to be my own."

[OOC: I couldn't get to sleep while thinking about this ping. But it's done! SP to make sure we do whatever else needs to be done justice? :D]

Momoko nodded. A lot. The tone of his voice had nothing to do with it, though; she didn't want to do something that would hurt Ms Helena!

"I already messed up with Roy, so I totally understand!" Not that she knew how she'd messed up, but she had. "I don't know about you, but I totally know your family's name, so I'll be careful! Can I ask a strange question? Is it pretty, your Gotham? I mean, the one I know is pretty, but it sometimes seems really dark. Almost like it's hiding a sad secret."

Bruce gave a slight nod to her promise, figuring that was all that needed to be said.

"It was. Maybe it still is, but I have trouble seeing it that way," Bruce admitted. "But I plan to do what I can with the Wayne family name to bring it back to what it was, even in my eyes."
