Ethics [December 16, 2nd period]

"Unlike some of the other teachers here, I still expect you to complete a final examination this week," Anakin said as he shut the door and began passing out paperwork. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You write down which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white absolutely correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

And when he was unhappy, final grades reflected it. He'd come a long way--he used to kill people when he was unhappy...

Anakin winced. "Yes, a Han Solo left unsupervised is a bad, bad idea." They did things like break out of carbonite, assist with blowing up Death Stars and other annoying things. "What was he here for?"

"He let me take the kids up in the Falcon for the final," she said, and paused. "And got to quiz me on everything I've done the last four months. Added bonus for him."

"Was that his price for letting you borrow the ship?" Anakin asked. "If so, that was downright crafty of him."

"I think it was. And I really should have seen it coming," Jaina grumbled. "Though don't get me wrong, I'm happy to get time with him. even if he got my internal argument over whether or not to stick around going again."

"How's it weighing out today?" Anakin replied.

"I don't know," Jaina admitted with a sigh. "I'd like to stay, but don't know if it's worth me missing time I could be working. It's an age-old debate with me."

He nodded. "What would you do here?" he asked.

Rory and her pro/con lists had worn off on him.

"I still have Caritas," she said, "but at this point if I'm still deciding, I think teaching's out. I'm tempted to see if that added free time means I can start easing back into more missions back home. I'd prefer to just go back and start working like normal again, but I don't know how well that'd go over yet, considering how I left. Plus, maybe I can use the time here to get in some training with people I can learn things from that I can't at home." Not that she knew who all was left, but that wasn't the point.

"Might want to talk to Luke," Anakin agreed, "but it seems like a waste of a highly trained Jedi to be pouring drinks."

He tapped his fingers against his desk. "How much of this is about Jacen?" he asked finally.

A good half. "Some of it," she said after a brief pause. "Things aren't terrific between us. They're not as bad as they were, but... And let's face it, once I go back, my real focus is going to be waiting for something that may or may not happen without any clue as to how I could prevent it anymore."

It was a depressing, horrible thought, but there it was. The thought of her life being dominated by that scared her.

Anakin silently reached out for her hand. "Knowing only bits and pieces sucks, huh?" he said eloquently.

She reached over to squeeze his hand, but otherwise she was going to act like she was fine. "I'm okay with bits and pieces, I just wish I had some key information. It's just waiting and hoping there's somewhere to intervene." And even then, she didn't know how much she could do, especially after hearing Anakin's story about his fall.

"And if there's not?" Anakin asked with his typical inability to avoid the uncomfortable question.

"Then I deal with it, see what can be done." She still didn't talk about the possibility of killing him if she had to seriously deal with it. She just wasn't there yet.

He gave her hand a little squeeze. "I can see the appeal of staying here, then."

"But it's just that. Appeal. Not a reason," she said, dropping his hand.

"Talk to Luke," Anakin urged. "He's Grand Master and it's his job to make really difficult choices."

"The problem there is that if I don't like his choice, I tend to just not go along with it," she pointed out.

Anakin snickered. "I'll start calling you Qui-Gon," he said. "What would you like him to say?" he asked more seriously.

Oh, Jaina and Qui-Gon would have gotten along great.

"I want him to offer a compromise," Jaina said honestly. "It's not like I wasn't good at living between two galaxies. I managed three timelines at once, even. I was stretched thin, but I didn't feel like I was cheating anyone or anything."

Anakin looked thoughtful. "When you were a student? Because I remember it slightly differently."

"Keep in mind that I'm saner now," Jaina said. "How do you remember it?" She would be the first to admit time colored some of how she looked back on things.

"I remember getting the distinct impression that this island was a waste of your time," Anakin said.

"It depended on the day a lot of the time," she said, making a face. "And whether anyone I knew had died recently or I was having relationship drama. Okay, maybe I felt like I was cheating people back then. Now I'm glad I stayed to graduate."
