Ethics [December 16, 2nd period]

"Unlike some of the other teachers here, I still expect you to complete a final examination this week," Anakin said as he shut the door and began passing out paperwork. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You write down which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white absolutely correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

And when he was unhappy, final grades reflected it. He'd come a long way--he used to kill people when he was unhappy...

Anakin silently reached out for her hand. "Knowing only bits and pieces sucks, huh?" he said eloquently.

She reached over to squeeze his hand, but otherwise she was going to act like she was fine. "I'm okay with bits and pieces, I just wish I had some key information. It's just waiting and hoping there's somewhere to intervene." And even then, she didn't know how much she could do, especially after hearing Anakin's story about his fall.

"And if there's not?" Anakin asked with his typical inability to avoid the uncomfortable question.

"Then I deal with it, see what can be done." She still didn't talk about the possibility of killing him if she had to seriously deal with it. She just wasn't there yet.

He gave her hand a little squeeze. "I can see the appeal of staying here, then."

"But it's just that. Appeal. Not a reason," she said, dropping his hand.

"Talk to Luke," Anakin urged. "He's Grand Master and it's his job to make really difficult choices."

"The problem there is that if I don't like his choice, I tend to just not go along with it," she pointed out.

Anakin snickered. "I'll start calling you Qui-Gon," he said. "What would you like him to say?" he asked more seriously.

Oh, Jaina and Qui-Gon would have gotten along great.

"I want him to offer a compromise," Jaina said honestly. "It's not like I wasn't good at living between two galaxies. I managed three timelines at once, even. I was stretched thin, but I didn't feel like I was cheating anyone or anything."

Anakin looked thoughtful. "When you were a student? Because I remember it slightly differently."

"Keep in mind that I'm saner now," Jaina said. "How do you remember it?" She would be the first to admit time colored some of how she looked back on things.

"I remember getting the distinct impression that this island was a waste of your time," Anakin said.

"It depended on the day a lot of the time," she said, making a face. "And whether anyone I knew had died recently or I was having relationship drama. Okay, maybe I felt like I was cheating people back then. Now I'm glad I stayed to graduate."

"She can be taught," Anakin teased gently.

"Occasionally. I thought I knew everything at eighteen. Now I actually do," she joked. "And despite the many valid faults of this place, it has been good for me. I know that now."

"Welcome to my eternal atonement," Anakin said with a wave of his hand. "Teaching the lessons I've learned to teenagers too smart to listen to me."

"Give them ten years and a few crises, they'll get it," she said. "And that's a big part of what keeps me here; I had some things really wrong with me when I got here, and I don't feel like I'm much of a mess anymore. I'm also not where I need to be, I think, and I don't want to just undo the last four months." See also the fear about Jacen she couldn't deal with yet.

"Well, if we're grading on the family scale, you're perfectly fine," Anakin said. "If you use what other people use, there's still some work to do."

"I need to go from the scale of someone whose twin might be a Sith in a few years," Jaina said flatly. "Right now I don't want to deal with it at all, but I know if the time comes, I can't have that attitude."

Which was why someone wasn't going to get all distracted by any love triangles.

Anakin nodded, going very serious. "Luke's looking too?"

"He is. But at the same time..." She sighed, folding her arms. "Jacen knows all these things no one else can do, and he's the only one Ben responds to. It makes for a rough situation."

"Ben's still being taught by him?" Anakin asked, looking alarmed.

"Ben's learning," she shrugged. "I couldn't get that kid to open up. Neither could his parents. And Jacen's been fine since I got back here..." She wasn't happy about it, but.

Anakin sighed heavily, not looking happy either. "What a mess," he said eloquently.
