Ethics [December 16, 2nd period]

"Unlike some of the other teachers here, I still expect you to complete a final examination this week," Anakin said as he shut the door and began passing out paperwork. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You write down which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white absolutely correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

And when he was unhappy, final grades reflected it. He'd come a long way--he used to kill people when he was unhappy...

Anakin gave her a little smile. "The optimism is not from me."

"It's a lasting byproduct of dealing with several optimists in high school," she promised. "Who knew?"

He chuckled. "And I've lived with Rory all this time and still manage to be grumpy."

Or so he thought.

"Don't say you're grumpy when you just chuckled," Jaina told him.

"I can be grumpy!" Anakin insisted.

"You can be, but I'm just saying, you're chuckling when you say it," Jaina teased.

He smiled. "Rory makes me happy."

Dork.

Jaina made a face, mostly to tease. "Now you're getting mushy."

"Would you prefer I not like her?" Anakin asked.

"No," she said honestly. "I'm really glad she makes you happy."

He smiled. "Very, even if I don't deserve it."

"That's debatable," Jaina said. She still wasn't sure where she fell on that debate, but it looked like she'd learned something about forgiveness down the line, or something. "I think I've talked your ear off enough. I should probably go."

"Feel better?" he asked.

"I don't know about better," she said thoughtfully. "But I think I'm on the way to figuring things out, either way." The fact that she talked more about the benefits of staying than of going home said a lot, she thought.

"I'll be holding office hours on Tuesday even without classes," he said with a smile. "It gives me a place to wrap gifts. Stop by if you've made a decision."

"I will," she said. "Thanks for this, and I'll see you then."
