Is A Cigar Just A Cigar, Tuesday, Period 3

"I'm very glad to see all of you back and in one piece," Cindy said as the class filed in. "I wasn't looking forward to failing anyone because they got themselves hurt acting like an idiot."

But she totally would, let's be clear.

"So today is your final," she said, handing a stack of papers to Jaime ~~if he was there~~ to begin handing out. "You've been a great class this semester and I'm glad we got to work together. Hopefully you'll retain some of this information past the winter break--it'll be useful for those of you who intend to go on to college in this world, I promise."

She pointed at her desk, which was covered with a platter of pastries and a to-go container of milk and another of tea. Also napkins. Lots of napkins. "Help yourselves to some of the snacks while you work," she offered, and when you're done with your final, you're free to go. I hope I see you in future classes.

Jaime smiled back.

Of course.

"Everything's fine," he answered. "I'll just..." he trailed off with a shrug.

"I don't suppose I can convince you to stay a bit and help me clean up after your classmates?" Cindy asked.

Yeah, like she thought it would take a lot of convincing, even with crumbs and used napkins.

"TA perk?" she teased.

Jaime's grin blossomed full-force. "You could probably convince me," he declared. It would, in fact, be very easy. It had, in fact, already been done just by her bringing it up.

"I'll let you take the leftovers back to the dorms?" Cindy offered. "Free food, Jaime."

Because he needed to be bribed. Yes.

"You apparently know the way to a guy's heart."

...

He meant through his stomach!

Suuuuuuuuuuure.

Cindy raised an eyebrow and laughed. "I've been accused of that once or twice," she said. "Though I hardly think the remains of a box of store-bought pastries was what they had in mind when they coined that saying."

"Yeah, well, I don't think they were thinking of poor high school students either, doesn't make it any less true."

Jaime paused, just a bit awkwardly, then looked up at Cindy. "I've really enjoyed this class."

"I'm glad you did, Jaime," Cindy said, giving him one of the most genuine smiles she'd worn at Fandom. "I was very glad to have you as a TA as well."

Especially when he blushed so hard she worried about the veins in his head.

"I'll be teaching a class next semester, too, that could use a TA or two," she added. Casually. As you do.

"Really?"

Had that come out too excited-devoted-puppy?

Yeah. It probably had.

"Um. I mean. What are you teaching?"

This time, Cindy hid her smile. Jaime was adorable. She wasn't allowed to pinch his cheeks, was she?

"Probably a class to introduce our time- and world-displaced students to modern day America," Cindy said, leaning against her desk. "Not to Fandom, but to things like email and cell phones, and slightly bigger things like how much a dollar is worth and why it isn't scandalous for women to wear pants. Stuff like that."

"Huh." Jaime went from flustered to thoughtful. "Sort of an explanation and analysis of modern society." Color him intrigued.

"Exactly, though it will be less an analysis and more an explanation," Cindy said, a touch regretfully. "We'll need most of those fifteen weeks to get them comfortable in their new surroundings, as opposed to tackling a lot of the moral and ethical questions facing our day."

Jaime nodded thoughtfully. "Maybe there'll be extra credit..." he murmured.

Oh, wait... he'd said that out loud in front of the teacher, hadn't he?

Cure the blush.

"Looking for extra credit, Jaime?" Cindy teased. "I wouldn't be averse to have extra study sessions if the class is interested."

Jaime's mouth opened. Then closed. Then did that all over again. But no words were coming out.

Also, his face was on fire.

And he was sure it was obvious to Cindy, which only made it worse.

(Could this conversation get any more embarrassing?)

It could, actually. But Cindy wasn't that cruel.

Because, yes, it was very obvious to Cindy. But that didn't mean she couldn't ignore it like a champ. Until later, when she called Bigby. "If you're willing to run extra sessions, it would look excellent on college applications," she pointed out. "And if you wanted me to write a letter of recommendation."

"That'd be great," Jaime smiled. Now he looked a bit nervous for different reasons.

College applications.

Meep.

See? Cindy was helping. Now he was less focused on his very obvious crush!

"You know I'd write one even if you don't run anything extra next semester, right?" she asked. "Have you started thinking about college yet?"

Jaime nodded. "I'm still waiting on my second SAT score to come in. And I'm finalizing my list of places to apply to." He was totally on top of things. Which didn't stop him from being nervous.

They'd finished cleaning up, but Cindy didn't seem inclined to leave quite yet. She perched on her desk and regarded him with interest. "Have you thought about your major yet?" she asked.

"Well, a little bit?" By which he meant 'a lot'.

"I'm trying to pick something that will make it easy to go on to dental school, but that will be useful in its own right. Like, no pre-med or whatever, you know?"

"Maybe biology or pharmacy?" Cindy suggested. "A dentist, huh? Any particular reason?"

Honestly, it wasn't an occupation she saw any of the students here choosing. On the other hand, Jaime usually wasn't one of the kids running around wielding a sword or magic against invaders, so who knew?

"Isn't pharmacy school, like, five or six years?" Jaime asked. He wasn't actually sure...

"But I've always wanted to be a dentist. Good pay, reasonable hours... what's not to like?"

Cindy shrugged a bit. "I think there might also just be pre-pharmacy programs for your bachelor's degree. It all depends on where you go to school." And then she was chuckling a bit at Jaime's reasoning. "Good points, both of them. I'm sorry my classes won't be useful for much more than your gen eds, though."

Jaime grinned. "Well, they get me thinking, that's probably helpful, right?" And Ms. Perrault taught them...
