Is A Cigar Just A Cigar, Tuesday, Period 3

"I'm very glad to see all of you back and in one piece," Cindy said as the class filed in. "I wasn't looking forward to failing anyone because they got themselves hurt acting like an idiot."

But she totally would, let's be clear.

"So today is your final," she said, handing a stack of papers to Jaime ~~if he was there~~ to begin handing out. "You've been a great class this semester and I'm glad we got to work together. Hopefully you'll retain some of this information past the winter break--it'll be useful for those of you who intend to go on to college in this world, I promise."

She pointed at her desk, which was covered with a platter of pastries and a to-go container of milk and another of tea. Also napkins. Lots of napkins. "Help yourselves to some of the snacks while you work," she offered, and when you're done with your final, you're free to go. I hope I see you in future classes.

As long as it wasn't a babbled confession, Cindy would be okay. She grabbed the box of pastries and slid it over to him. "At least I don't have to worry about cavities by giving these all to you," she said. "Thanks for your help this semester, Jaime. You've been great."

He shook his head, still flushed. "I'm glad I didn't screw things up."

"Not at all," Cindy said. "In fact, you covered for me when I missed my class without notice. I really appreciate knowing that I can count on you. If you want a TA spot next semester, it's yours."

And now he was blushing harder than ever. "Thank you."

"Thank you, Jaime," Cindy retorted. "I wouldn't make the offer if you didn't deserve it."

Jaime just smiled and nodded, still finding it hard to look up and meet her gaze.

Since he carefully wasn't looking at her, Cindy allowed herself a wider grin. "I also appreciate you sticking around to help me clean up this classroom. I'm sure Fosse and Principle Winchester might have had something to say if we'd just left it like that."

She grabbed her coat off her chair. "Ready to brave the cold back to the dorms?"

"I'm glad to help you not get in trouble," Jaime declared, grabbing his own coat.

"And I don't know if I've mentioned it, but it is so much colder here than in Texas."

"I can imagine," Cindy said. "But it's a lot warmer than New York. All those tall buildings act just like a wind tunnel. Where in Texas?"

"El Paso." He shook his head. "And I knew those skyscrapers had to have some sort of huge downside."

"Bite your tongue," Cindy laughed. "New York is still the best city in the world. El Paso, huh? Everything I know about El Paso begins and ends with the salsa. Lived there your whole life?"

"Yep. And we've got way more awesome food than salsa."

He grinned a bit. "If you ever wanted to visit, I bet my mom would put you up."

"You'd have to convince me that there was something in Texas that I couldn't find better in New York," Cindy said with a wink. Completely ignoring the suggestion she stay at his house, oh yes. "Besides cows. And the Alamo."

"Real Mexican food," Jaime answered immediately.

"Ooooh, you make an excellent case, Mr. Reyes," Cindy said with an approving nod. "Though there is an excellent little place in Spanish Harlem..."

"Not the same," Jaime waved quickly.

Not that he actually knew that for sure. He just had to defend his home town, you know?

Of course! That's what hometown pride was all about!

Cindy paused to lock the classroom door behind them. "You sound very knowledgeable," she teased, pocketing her keys. "Have you been to New York before?"

Jaime nodded. "I visited once. But... that was really just me playing tourist, you know?"

"Jaime, let me let you in on a little secret," Cindy said genially. "Even the most jaded resident of New York plays tourist sometimes. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise."

"Can you tell me that without having to kill me?" Jaime asked with a broad grin.

"Unfortunately not," Cindy said with a reluctant sigh. "Don't worry, Jaime, I'll try to make this as painless as possible for both of us."

Cindy was so, so glad to be joking here.

Jaime sighed oh-so-theatrically. "Well, I guess there's nothing I can do about it. Just... make it quick?"

And then, of course, he flushed again.

Cindy laughed again. Sorry, Jaime. There was just no way not.

"I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of experience here," she ~~LIED LIKE A LYING THING~~ said with an apologetic shrug. "We're just going to have to muddle on as best we can."

"I suppose we will." Jaime cocked his head slightly. "Though... if you could... at least be gentle?"

...

Wait...

What did he just say?

There was a moment of complete and utter silence, where Cindy just stopped and stared at Jaime for a moment.

And then she fell backwards laughing, holding onto the lockers for support.

"I'm pretty sure..." she said in between fits, "...that any answer I make to that...will get me fired."
