Is A Cigar Just A Cigar, Tuesday, Period 3

"I'm very glad to see all of you back and in one piece," Cindy said as the class filed in. "I wasn't looking forward to failing anyone because they got themselves hurt acting like an idiot."

But she totally would, let's be clear.

"So today is your final," she said, handing a stack of papers to Jaime ~~if he was there~~ to begin handing out. "You've been a great class this semester and I'm glad we got to work together. Hopefully you'll retain some of this information past the winter break--it'll be useful for those of you who intend to go on to college in this world, I promise."

She pointed at her desk, which was covered with a platter of pastries and a to-go container of milk and another of tea. Also napkins. Lots of napkins. "Help yourselves to some of the snacks while you work," she offered, and when you're done with your final, you're free to go. I hope I see you in future classes.

Weather = mood, sunny = good, stormy = upset...

IT should come as no surprise to anyone that Scully wrote in equations. Which were a metaphor for relationships.

Please define the following and provide an example:

Allusion--

Metaphor--

Simile--

Symbol--

Reference: Alluding to the Bible, cartoons, pop culture, as a way of supporting one's argument that some things are commonly known.

Metaphor: Using one thing as a placeholder for something else, i.e., art for spirituality, cars for power, aliens for the psychological difficulties that all single professional people must deal with in their careers while dealing with their childhood problems.

Simile: A comparison. Someone's smile is like a knife (cutting and sharp and shiny), their voice is like chocolate (delicious and thick), and so on. [hopefully not both at once]

Symbol: An object which stands for more than one thing, laden with cultural, religious, or political implications. A badge stands for law enforcement, a cross stands for Christianity, red hair supposedly stands for passion, and so on.

Write a short scene using any of the symbols we discussed in class, except for the three you've already defined in Part 1.

Scully detailed a scene in which one could discern that the phone banter with a woman's best friend was actually a metaphor for sex, especially since he was using suggestive words and asking her if she called other people when he wasn't around.

It was possible she had red hair.

But no asking him for answers!

He was there! Handing out papers and stuff! And trying not to look sad at the prospect of not seeing Ms. Perrault every week.

Jaime, of course, didn't leave after he finished his exam. First he dawdled over it, "checking his answers" four or five times, and then giving up and just sitting around.

He wanted to ~~spend more time with Cindy~~ say thanks for the interesting class!

"Jaime?" Cindy asked with a smile. "Is everything all right?"

Jaime smiled back.

Of course.

"Everything's fine," he answered. "I'll just..." he trailed off with a shrug.

"I don't suppose I can convince you to stay a bit and help me clean up after your classmates?" Cindy asked.

Yeah, like she thought it would take a lot of convincing, even with crumbs and used napkins.

"TA perk?" she teased.

Jaime's grin blossomed full-force. "You could probably convince me," he declared. It would, in fact, be very easy. It had, in fact, already been done just by her bringing it up.
