Is A Cigar Just A Cigar, Tuesday, Period 3

"I'm very glad to see all of you back and in one piece," Cindy said as the class filed in. "I wasn't looking forward to failing anyone because they got themselves hurt acting like an idiot."

But she totally would, let's be clear.

"So today is your final," she said, handing a stack of papers to Jaime ~~if he was there~~ to begin handing out. "You've been a great class this semester and I'm glad we got to work together. Hopefully you'll retain some of this information past the winter break--it'll be useful for those of you who intend to go on to college in this world, I promise."

She pointed at her desk, which was covered with a platter of pastries and a to-go container of milk and another of tea. Also napkins. Lots of napkins. "Help yourselves to some of the snacks while you work," she offered, and when you're done with your final, you're free to go. I hope I see you in future classes.

"I... don't know, actually. Though if you asked her today she'd probably say 'no way' since I'm here. She'll want to do her own thing."

Brat.

"That's not an entirely bad thing," Cindy pointed out. "I bet you're a hard example to live up to. She might think forging her own path is the only way to avoid being unfavorably compared to her big brother."

Jaime didn't even bother trying to suppress a laugh. "I think that you're imparting much more complex motives to her than she has."

"Or she's in middle school and you're gross," Cindy said agreeably. "But wasn't mine much nicer?"

"Sure, but there's no need to be nice to her." His tone almost gave the impression that Jaime was on the verge of sticking his tongue out. Maybe even saying 'nya, nya, nya'.

Except not in front of Ms. Perrault. He wanted her to think he was mature, after all.

He'd been doing an amazing job of coming off suave and cool so far, really!

"You're giving me quite the insight into sibling dynamics, Jaime. I see now what I've been missing by not having a brother."

He was smooth and cool like a super-spy!

"Nothing?" Jaime suggested.

"Nonsense," she chided. "You sound like you're both very fond of one another--in between the hair-pulling and ankle-kicking."

"Fond?" Jaime repeated, trying to sound affronted.

Then, despite himself, he smiled. "Maybe a bit."

"I promise I won't tell," Cindy said, sounding very solemn indeed. "I'll even leave it off your report card."

...Did students still get report cards? Damn, that's something she should look into.

"I appreciate it," Jaime laughed.

"I'd hate for your parents to think I was talking about a different Jaime Reyes," she added.

"Oh, I can see it now! They'd come to the island and demand to know why the school had cloned me and what they'd done with the original."

"While your sister demanded that we keep this version?" Cindy teased.

"I don't know... She's hard to please, after all."

"She's a young woman, Jaime," Cindy said, wagging her finger. "It's a trait."

"Tell me about it," Jaime huffed. "It makes me crazy."

"And I'm sure you do nothing to return the favor."

"Well, of course not," Jaime declared in what may have been the most unbelievable statement of the year. "I'm nice and helpful and all that stuff."

"Jaime, just because we're no longer in the classroom, it doesn't mean I've turned into a complete idiot, I promise you," Cindy said, laughing. "I don't believe that for a minute."

Jaime pouted unconvincingly. "Are you saying you suspect me of picking on my sister?"

"Absolutely," Cindy said, nodding. "Without a doubt in my mind."

"I'm hurt. Hurt by your allegations."

If he wanted her to believe that, he should probably have suppressed his big grin.

"Shall I pass you a handkerchief?" Cindy asked dryly.

"That would be very generous. And only right after you made me cry."
