Tracking: Urban v. Wilderness; Thursday, Period Three [ 09/30 ].
"Hello, class," Angua greeted the students with a faint smile. "Long time, no see. I hope you enjoyed your holiday and that our last few classes can actually happen consecutively without the usual interruptions. Today, I'd just like to go ahead and work on an activity to kind of get your brains back into the tracking mindset, as well as remembering everything we've gone over in class so far to help you find and track a person, animal, thing, what have you."
"You may work alone or in pairs if you like, and, when you're ready, you will have to track something down, but you know very little about it. I hesitate to use the word 'clue,' but, essentially, that's what you'll be given. You won't know if you'll be going into an urban setting or a wilderness one; you'll have to improvise. And remember, it could lead anywhere. I know quite a few good stories about tracking personally, but probably only half of them are even appropriate for school."
Sad, but true.
"So take a few moments, grab a partner if you'd like, or as any questions, and then I'll let you know your scenario and any other additional..." Sigh, "clues."

"Even better," she offered, nodding toward the manhole in the cobblestone. "It appears that your target is heading for the sewers. You don't know much about him, except that he's short, rotund, and has a certain scent of rat about him."
Which, in Ankh-Morpork, could have simply meant that he'd just had lunch.
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"Did I piss you off or something?"
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"I can handle it," he nodded, already turning towards the manhole when I remembered the part before the flattery. "What's Black Ribboners?"
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"Vampires who abstain from blood," Angua said, with a slight glance toward the other TA. "'Not a single drop.' It's quite..." She tried to keep her lip curl down, "fashionable in the city."
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"Right. I'm gonna go catch a rat," he motioned towards the manhole.
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
And, even then, there were...quite a lot of rodents underground as well, so the challenge would then be figuring out which was the one he was looking for.
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
He started moving as his nose adjusted, ears pricked for any obvious sounds but there was a great scurrying of creatures and nothing so much like a human. It was when his nose as numb to the worst stench that he picked up a rat scent, but led in all different directions.
"I'm so showering for an hour after this," he grumbled to himself when a sound came from some distance away. He instantly headed towards his, concentrating on his hearing rather than his nose. He almost thought he must have imagined it when it came again, a good distance away and then he was speeding up.
The place felt like a maze, the sound echoing and a few times he took a wrong turn until in the distance he caught a glimpse and a strong scent. "Got him," he smirked.

She handed it over to Ben. "This was left behind; you can see the hole in it from where it was caught on a nail at the entrance to the city. They think the person it belongs to was heading out of the city, but they're not sure. Think you'd know how to start tracking from just a scarf, or would you need more?"

Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
Welcome to your first taste of Ankh-Morporkian police work, Ben.
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
He was looking carefully at the...questionable thing...on the scarf. "I suppose it would be considered cheating if I used my datapad to analyze the stain?"
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
Pause.
"Wait, your datapad doesn't involve imps, does it?"
Because then she might have to change her mind.

Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
Or was it catsup?
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"Ketchup?" he said aloud. "Is there a junk food place near the gate?"
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
super late omg.Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"There's a body missing," she informed him. "An important body, and a live one, or, at least, it was when it was last seen. Belonging to the daughter of a visiting dignitary. No one's seen her around the city since she was last seen, but her parents have offered up her bottle of perfume, hoping that the scent might help us find her better. Apparently, she practically bathes in the stuff."
She held out the little square bottle with the horribly pink squeeze ball for puffing.

Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"You're tracking a dwarf," she informed him. "A real surly character who believes in the older ways, meaning he rarely comes up to the surface. So if he came up here to do something enough to get you to track him, it had to be something big. Of course he's not staying there very long. Witnesses saw him heading down there, which leads under the sewers, and he left this."
She held out an oblong shaped rock.
"We can only assume it was his lunch."
Re: Tracking -- Tracking, 12/02.
"Dwarves eat... rocks?" he asked hesitantly.
