Tracking: Urban v. Wilderness; Thursday, Period Three [ 09/30 ].

"Hello, class," Angua greeted the students with a faint smile. "Long time, no see. I hope you enjoyed your holiday and that our last few classes can actually happen consecutively without the usual interruptions. Today, I'd just like to go ahead and work on an activity to kind of get your brains back into the tracking mindset, as well as remembering everything we've gone over in class so far to help you find and track a person, animal, thing, what have you."

"You may work alone or in pairs if you like, and, when you're ready, you will have to track something down, but you know very little about it. I hesitate to use the word 'clue,' but, essentially, that's what you'll be given. You won't know if you'll be going into an urban setting or a wilderness one; you'll have to improvise. And remember, it could lead anywhere. I know quite a few good stories about tracking personally, but probably only half of them are even appropriate for school."

Sad, but true.

"So take a few moments, grab a partner if you'd like, or as any questions, and then I'll let you know your scenario and any other additional..." Sigh, "clues."

Jake bounced on his feet as he approached Angua. "Nothing with peppermint?" he asked. Not that he was expecting her to take requests. It couldn't hurt, though. Right?

Well... That stopped the bouncing as he grimaced and wished there was peppermint again.

"Did I piss you off or something?"

Oh sure, flattery. Of course that'd work with a teenager.

"I can handle it," he nodded, already turning towards the manhole when I remembered the part before the flattery. "What's Black Ribboners?"

"Vegetarians," Jake muttered with an eyeroll, still not buying it.

"Right. I'm gonna go catch a rat," he motioned towards the manhole.

He figured that out rather sooner than later. The instant he was inside the sewers, the scent was just too overwhelming for him to even make a difference between them all. He had a good nose, but he lacked the experience Angua and Firekeeper had.

He started moving as his nose adjusted, ears pricked for any obvious sounds but there was a great scurrying of creatures and nothing so much like a human. It was when his nose as numb to the worst stench that he picked up a rat scent, but led in all different directions.

"I'm so showering for an hour after this," he grumbled to himself when a sound came from some distance away. He instantly headed towards his, concentrating on his hearing rather than his nose. He almost thought he must have imagined it when it came again, a good distance away and then he was speeding up.

The place felt like a maze, the sound echoing and a few times he took a wrong turn until in the distance he caught a glimpse and a strong scent. "Got him," he smirked.
