Library, [11/14]

Jonothon had kind of been expecting the weird mess of emotions to be faded or gone, by now. It had been nearly a week, after all, and it had taken him until Wednesday to give in to all of the psionic feedback from the rest of the island and let himself feel the same, but he had. And once he had, it was difficult to wrestle down again.

Everything seemed hotter than usual, so he'd left his jacket in his room today. And everything seemed far more constricting than usual, as well, so he'd worn one of his few pairs of blue jeans.

And now, he was doing one of the least sexy things he could possibly think of in order to keep busy in the library today. He was going through files, making certain that there weren't any books overdue. It was, after all, very difficult to be amorous when you were wrestling with a filing system.

If that didn't work, he'd go and straighten out the hunting magazines over in periodicals. Paper cuts and photos of dead animals also made it difficult to lapse into any sort of mood.

Ariel inspected the finger with narrowed eyes, thinking that the magazine better hope it was just a papercut or else there'd be trouble. But, thankfully for the magazine, it most certainly was, and there wasn't any real harm done, so, satisfied, Ariel nodded and ceased inspection, holding up her own finger.

"I got a couple of those last night, too," she said with sympathy. "I was hard at work making something."

Jono re-claimed his hand, giving it a little shake in lieu of being able to just stick his finger in his mouth to be done with it.

//Had a bit of a project on yer hands, did you?//

Jono was going to invest in gloves. Armoured ones. Armoured gloves with little grips in the fingers so that he could handle paper more easily. Yes, that sounded like a plan.

"I did! And," with a little bit of fumbling through her bag to make the presentation not quite as smooth as she had anticipated, Ariel eventually brandished an envelope proudly, "Ta-da! Here it is! You're the first to get yours."

She handed the envelope over; it was a pretty pale pink with his name scrawled neatly on it, amid a sea of little hearts and stars and fish, and, since it was Jono's, a few musical notes as well. Inside, he'd find the invitation to her birthday party on Friday (http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb3/skylieicons/invite-1.png), an equally decorated collection of three seashells strung together on a ribbon.

And, clearly, she was quite proud of it, beaming without end as she handed it over and hoped it didn't give him another papercut, because then she'd just feel bad.

Jono accepted his invitation without papercut-related incident, and even opened the envelope with the same good fortune, pulling out the invite and giving it a read-over.

//A pool party, luv?//

That was said in the very carefully-practised tone of someone who wanted to come off as enthusiastic while at the same time perhaps slightly terrified at the prospect of what had just been presented to him.

So, very, very neutral.

For a second, Ariel stared at Jono with that response, with a flash of worry that, somehow, even though she hadn't told him, he knew about the sort of fire she was playing with in her theme, but then realized that there wasn't any way he could and that his response was entirely because of, well...

At least, she hoped that was it.

She turned immediately as pink as the envelope. "Well, you don't have to swim or anything, of course. It'd just be nice to have your company..."

Feeling as if that sounded terribly inadequate, Ariel ducked her head a little and muttered, "I really like the pool..."

Really, Jono was more worried about the sort of fire that he was playing with, but that was neither here nor there.

//... I'll be there, then,// he replied, after a moment's consideration. //I just don't own any proper swimming things, so I can't swim, obviously.//

Yes. That was the reason he couldn't get into the pool. It had nothing to do with the steaming that he tended to do once he got out again, or the fact that, while his bandages were adequate for dunk tanks, holding in place while he was swimming was a different matter entirely.

//It's yer birthday, Sunshine,// he added, a little more softly, after another moment's pause. //You don't have to justify yer pool party to me.//

Ariel smiled a little; it was hard not to when he called her Sunshine.

"Thank you," she said. "It'll still be fun for people who don't want to swim, too, I promise. Maybe I should let you pick some of the soundtrack."

//I'll bring some albums,// Jono replied. //Grab some variety, for those who aren't as into Pearl Jam as I am.//

It was the least he could do, considering he was bound to spend a good chunk of the party looking longingly at the water. He'd put forth his best effort not to be a huge spoilsport, though.

A spark did ignite with that. "Oooooh, you could totally DJ! It'll have the best music of any party ever!"

And she felt that, maybe, since Jono loved music so much, it could be a good middle ground.

... Oh, you wicked temptress, you. Jonothon wouldn't bring any of his guitars within twenty feet of the pool for fear of being cannonballed, but DJing was a different matter entirely.

//You know... I could?//

He could, and he'd enjoy doing it, and who else on the island, with the exception of the people at the radio station, had access to as much music as he did?

"You could!" Ariel confirmed with a pleased little bounce. "We'll have a special spot for music, well away from any splash zone range. Perfect!"

//Any requests?//

Hey, it was her birthday, after all. And while he thought he had a decent idea as to the sorts of music that she'd like to hear, he didn't want to go and accidentally miss anything just because he'd decided to go with his instincts. Or something like that.

Ariel shook her head, still grinning. "Nope. I like surprises better."

//Well, then I'll be certain to pick something for you in particular, luv.//

Something to dance to.

... Either slowly if people were going to be doing so on deck, or else in the water, which could always be an interesting sight.

Maybe the Hokey Pokey. Just because he cared.

Luckily for Jono, Ariel would totally appreciate the humor in that particular choice.

Unluckily, she'd make him do it with everyone, too.

But, for now, she was just going to beam happily and bounce a little more. "I can't wait!" she said. "Thank you so much. Best birthday present ever."

//Well, thank you for the invite,// Jono replied, a slight hint of a smile crinkling around his eyes. //I'm looking forward to it.//

That was the weird thing. He actually was looking forward to it.

Ariel was really getting to love that crinkle even more than Sunshine.

"Now it's going to seem like Thursday is just forever away," she said. "But hopefully next week will be less...weird than this week. Have you had a weird week, too?"

//... You have no idea, Ariel.//

Being a telepath had alternated between sucking to being amazing, and then had lingered there for a few days before traipsing its way back to suck.

//I think th'weird is pretty much everybody, honestly. I haven't really noticed anybody yet who isn't being affected by it.//

You know. It.

Ariel nodded, though, as far as she'd been able to grasp it, it was just a sort of vague offness about everything. For some reason, though she had no lack of evidence for it, it seemed her brain just couldn't connect.

"Well, it's a whole new week, and it's my birthday week, so this week will hopefully be better for everyone." She smiled again. "I got a letter from home, and Daddy's going to throw a big party, too, so I'll get to go home and visit everyone at the end of it, too."

//Oh, really? Looking forward to that, I hope? I imagine a birthday party for a princess must be exciting compared to th'simple celebrations of we peons.//

He was joking. You could tell by the way that he was still doing that smiling thing.

"Pffft," said Ariel, rolling her eyes but smirking. "Just you wait. Don't forget my party is being held by a princess; I know a few tricks. But Daddy really does tend to go all out when it's one of our birthdays."

//Sounds nice,// replied Jonothon, whose parents didn't even send him socks on his birthday. Every now and again, they might remember to send him a pair around Christmas, mostly to just get that particular chore the hell out of the way.

He wasn't all that torn up about it.

//But yer father won't have me as a DJ, and so we all know which of yer parties is going to be th'superior one.//

Mmmhm.

Ariel's head bobbed easily enough to that one. "He'll have Sebastian. Which means a lot of stuffy music and having to sing."

Pause.

"Well, the singing's not bad, but that probably means rehearsal first thing when I get home."

//It could always be worse, I suppose,// Jono mused. //He could be making you play th'saxophone.//

He kind of couldn't resist. So sue him.

"Ohmygosh, no," gushed Ariel with wide eyes. "Not even Sebastian's that evil."
