Library, [11/14]

Jonothon had kind of been expecting the weird mess of emotions to be faded or gone, by now. It had been nearly a week, after all, and it had taken him until Wednesday to give in to all of the psionic feedback from the rest of the island and let himself feel the same, but he had. And once he had, it was difficult to wrestle down again.

Everything seemed hotter than usual, so he'd left his jacket in his room today. And everything seemed far more constricting than usual, as well, so he'd worn one of his few pairs of blue jeans.

And now, he was doing one of the least sexy things he could possibly think of in order to keep busy in the library today. He was going through files, making certain that there weren't any books overdue. It was, after all, very difficult to be amorous when you were wrestling with a filing system.

If that didn't work, he'd go and straighten out the hunting magazines over in periodicals. Paper cuts and photos of dead animals also made it difficult to lapse into any sort of mood.

Oh, Ariel. It was going to be sticking up in all directions for the rest of the day, now.

Jono wrinkled his nose and tried to squirm away from that hair-ruffling, to little avail, and then gave his head a shake, floppy, tousled hair and all.

//When I don't end up looking like I've been caught in a tornado, you mean?//

"It's cute!" Ariel insisted, giggling as she surveyed Jono's attempts to muss up her handiwork with a critical eye. "Not so much tornado as, you know, just rolled out of bed."

Oh, dear, was that a quirked eyebrow?

//Oh, good. I've got that 'shagging in th'stacks' look, instead. Charming.//

... It kind of was. Not that he was going to hunt down a reflective surface to preen in front of, or anything.

"And have you?" asked Ariel, her voice verging on teasing conspiracy and a giggle.

//Oh, no, no, not in th'stacks,// Jonothon replied, bemused. //Th'last thing I need is some twisted notion that th'books are watching.//

This was Fandom. It could happen.

Not helping with the giggles, here, Jono.

"That's true," she admitted. "Not exactly the most private place. You'd have to go under the desk,or build a pillow fort or something."

Mmm. Pillow forts.

//A pillow fort, in th'library?// Jonothon squinted a little, and then shrugged. Why not? //Actually, that does have a bit of appeal about it. Though I doubt it'd stand up in th'face of... well...//

"You'd be surprised," Ariel informed him knowingly, when she wasn't able to breathe for the giggles. "But there is a problem of a lack of pillows, unless we went around and found and stripped any armchairs out there."

Jono's eyebrows made their way up underneath his hair.

//We?//

Not that he could deny that she was a very attractive person, and that he was probably putting too much stock into her vernacular at the moment...

He was going to reach for another one of those magazines, so that he could properly sort it. Yes.

If Ariel's brain hadn't actually gone there yet, it now most certainly was. At least she had the decency to blush.

"Well," she offered in an attempt to sound reasonable about the whole thing, "who else in the library am I going to make a pillow fort with? The librarian?"

Who was ruggedly attractive, sure, but ew.

Jonothon fiddled with the magazine for a moment, pretending that he was actually paying attention to things like dates and volume and issue numbers before finally just plopping it, unceremoniously and horribly out of order, onto the top of the pile that he'd made before.

//He's not exactly available, at any rate,// Jono pointed out. Because, naturally, you couldn't make pillow forts with men who already had families.

The plopping did inspire a little arch of Ariel's eyebrow.

"So, see?" she said. "We. It's really nice and cozy, but how would you know unless you tried?"

//Point...//

Ariel logic was insanely difficult to argue with.

//And you figure you can find enough cushions out there to build a fort with?//

"I can try!" said Ariel, looking far too excited about the opportunity. "We wouldn't even need that many pillows; we could use the desk for reinforcement."

Jono looked at the desk. And then at Ariel. And then back at the desk. Sadly, it was not a fort. But if they stopped talking about it and started piling pillows up against it, it could be a fort.

He looked down. Back up. Where were the pillows? The pillows were outside of the library, being the pillows their pillowfort could be made of...

//Knowing my luck, I'd smack my head on one of th'drawers,// Jono noted, thoughtfully.

To which Ariel could only respond: "We'll put a pillow in front of it!"

Duh!

//In front of my head?//

Or the desk...?

One of those.

//We're just building it for th'sake of building it, right?//

Again, he had to check. He wasn't exactly good at snogging, in forts or out of them. And he... vaguely suspected that he had something going on with Raven, now, though he couldn't tell anybody just what, and... lord, the way the island had been all week was getting maddening.

"Oh, sure, of course," said Ariel, nodding. "Just to build it."

Which might be more believable without that smirk and without that less than subtle wink.

Oh, Ariel. Jonothon kissed like fire. Your lips would chap. It would be very sad.

//We can't start snogging in th'library, Ariel,// Jonothon said very dutifully, considering he was giving that smirk a look. //Just to clarify.//

There was a slight pause, looking at Jono curiously.

"What's snogging?"

Jono and his slang.

Hey! Leave his colloquialisms out of this!

//... Kissing,// he replied, looking perhaps slightly pained as he did so.

"Oh!" said Ariel, because that made much more sense and she chuckled a little. "Well, no, of course we can't be snogging in the library..."

Not with his whole face thing, anyway. Ariel leaned on the desk, tilting her head and smiling sweetly.

"But there's always cuddling."

Cuddling would not remain just cuddling. Jonothon had been trying to beat the echoes of every bloody libido on the island off with a psionic stick all week, and he was painfully aware that cuddling couldn't possibly be so simple.

...

//In th'dark. On th'floor?//

Ariel's head bobbed along in a nod, wondering when Jono was going to get to any of the objectionable parts of the scenario,because it was all sounding pretty perfect to her right now.

The best that Jono's brain was coming up with in response at just that moment happened to be things like, 'erm,' and 'you see,' and 'by the way, I'm on fire,' none of which seemed to be terribly compelling arguments at this point, really.

And so, instead, he let whatever the first thing was that came to mind be the first thing that he said.

Always an excellent idea, right?

//You know what this library needs?// Jonothon didn't know what it was that the library needed. Bollocks. His eyes raced across the desk while he groped about mentally for something, anything to complete that statement with. //... Camouflage netting.//

... Damn you, hunting magazines!
