Library, [11/17]

Okay, so Jono was a little late getting himself into the library today for his shift, what with having to travel back from Vail and all, but he showed up as soon as possible, considering.

So soon, in fact, that he still had his bag of laundry and his guitar with him, both of which were sitting behind the desk while he set to work, re-shelving books and silently, very silently, chuckling to himself.

Once again, it looked as though he'd gotten off easy today, didn't it?

//It's not a bad world, if you know where to look,// Jono offered. //If nothing else, going to school here has been... good for getting to see it for what it should be, at least during break weeks like this one was.//

"Something worth protecting perhaps?" he asked, remembering an earlier conversation even if he did not truly understand the conflict Jonothon had spoken of.

//Something worth protecting,// Jono agreed, glancing up at Faramir thoughtfully as he closed his guitar case. //Even when it has other ideas about who it would rather be protected by.//

Somehow that brought him back to the conversation he'd been having earlier with Maladicta.

"Ideas can be changed," he suggested quietly. "Though some might take longer than others."

//Mmm, there's th'hope,// sighed Jonothon. There. Guitar case closed, he could stand up again. //It's worth making the attempt, at least.//

"I would believe so," Faramir agreed. "Though, I wish you did not have to make it. It seems that things are not supposed to be as easy."

//If they were easy, I suppose we'd hardly appreciate them as much,// Jono replied, shrugging and dusting himself off. //Everything worth having is worth earning, as well.//

Yet some things it seemed that he would never be able to earn. It was a bitter thought which he would not dwell on it now nor speak it out loud.

"You speak true," he said quietly.

Even if Faramir wasn't going to speak it, Jono happened to be thinking it, as well.

One step forward, three giant steps back. All of the time. That was life in general, it seemed.

//I speak from experience, I suppose.//

In some cases at least, yet most of the time Faramir did not let these thoughts get to him.

"It is important to know," Faramir said quietly. "And it seems that it is not always as easy to understand."

Jono considered that, thought for a moment on Faramir's tone, and then shrugged his shoulders a little and looked at his desk.

//But then, it wouldn't be life, otherwise.//

Faramir nodded and he shook his head.

"I apologise, my friend. Perhaps I am missing the mountains more than I thought," he said with an easy smile. Even if it knew it was not the mountains. "Come, tell me. Do you have another book in mind for me? I believe I know this one by heart by now."

It was kind of difficult not to know that the fish were red and blue, after a couple of read-throughs, wasn't it?

//Do you suppose yer ready for something a little less nonsensical than that one, just yet?//

Books were a nice, safe topic. Far more pleasant than the troubles of the world at large, really.

Or troubles involving kissing girls who liked girls and then promptly run away.

"I believe that I am ready for a challenge," he decided. The distraction would be welcome at least.

Really, now. Faramir should just be happy that he could kiss girls who liked girls.

//Perhaps a short novel, then? Nothing too intense, really, but certainly more wordy than One Fish, Two Fish?//

Perhaps so, but at this point Faramir was of the opinion that he would have rather avoid it.

"That sounds acceptable," Faramir nodded. "And perhaps some poetry?"

Someone was planning to hide in his room.

Jono nodded a bit.

//I can lead you to th'young adult section and help you pick something that you might like? Yer th'one who's going to have to read the inside of th'book, might as well get you into th'habit of reading th'backs of the covers, so that you can do this yerself whenever you want to.//

"That seems fair," Faramir agreed. He had at least noticed the summaries already and did not need to ask for an explanation on that. "I merely hope I can resist trying to read them all at once."

//At least begin at th'beginning and end at the end before you pick up th'next,// Jono replied, bemused. //Th'library isn't going anywhere, mate. You can always come back for more.//

"And yet, it will take more time than I have here to finish them all," Faramir pointed out. Even if he might try to prove himself wrong.

//Well, I suppose if you have some means of getting mail, I might be convinced to ship you some, after you've gone,// Jono offered. //What year are you?//

He was a senior, himself. But he'd go that extra mile for the sake of reading material.

It took an instant before Faramir realised exactly what Jonothon was asking. "Junior," he said, "though I am not certain how long my father wills me to stay here."

There was a topic he did not need to broach today. "There's plenty of books in the archives of Minas Tirith, but we are not allowed to take any of them with us. I do have a small collection that I bought myself."

//Odds are high that I won't be able to bring most of my things with me, when I graduate this coming year,// Jono shared. //I'd give you my books, if you were at all interested...//

Really, he'd managed to amass way too much stuff over this past year, including but not limited to three guitars, over a hundred records and CDs, and an animatronic parrot that had been stolen from the Tiki Room at Disney.

"I..." Faramir blinked. "I would be very much interested, but only if you are certain that you would have no use for them."

//I have libraries where I'm from that I can get books out of whenever I want,// Jono noted. //I could probably just mail them to myself, but I wouldn't have anywhere to keep them, anyhow.//

So far as he could figure, he was either going back to the Massachusetts Academy, or else he was going to live in a gutter somewhere. With his three guitars, because those were going with him come hell or high water, no matter what.
