Ethics [Thursday, October 7th, 2nd period]

The Danger Shop had been transformed into a different world when the Ethics class arrived: An incredibly dry, hot one which smelled really bad.

Anakin waved his hand around the room. "Welcome to the embodiment of gluttony," he said, "the palace of a Hutt."

He concentrated on the controls on the far side of the room, and the simulation sprung to life: dozens of beings of all shapes, sizes, and degrees of cleaniless (ranging from 'casual acquaintance with soap' to 'water is eeeeeevil') drinking, eating, and dancing. All activity centered around a slug of a beast laying on a raised dais (not that it really had many other options for range of motion) at the front of the room.

"That," Anakin said, nose wrinkling in disgust as he pointed, "is a Hutt. This particular version is named Jabba, and is one of the most powerful crime lords in the galaxy." Or was, but he wouldn't exactly be mentioned what happened to Jabba with Leia running around Fandom. "Today is an interactive experience for you. Take a good hard look around. See the effects that gluttony can have."

The one thing Elphaba liked about this place was the variety of creatures, all shapes and sizes and colors. Here, she wasn't the odd one.

But that was the extent of it, as otherwise the place bothered her.

"You're not Twi'lek," a green-skinned alien girl declared after a moment. "Where are you from?"

"Munchkinland, in Oz," Elphaba said. She could help but smile a bit. "You're right, I am not a Twi'lek. Is that what you are?"

The Twi'lek nodded. "Yes, from Ryloth. I'm unfamiliar with Oz. Is that closer to the Inner Rim?"

"I honestly don't know," Elphaba said, looking apologetic. "I barely knew of lands beyond the country of Oz before I left for school, and now there are worlds beyond even that. I wouldn't know what world Oz is on unless someone told me."

The Twi'lek looked sympathetic. "So they kept you ignorant," she surmised. "Was it so you would not be able to escape?"

Elphaba shook her head, though she had to think about that for a moment. "I don't think anyone knew of other worlds in Oz. Or... perhaps they did, but no one that I knew."

She paused. "Wait, escape?"

"If you don't where you are, you can't possibly find yourself leaving in the correct direction," the Twi'lek replied.

It didn't occur to her that most beings didn't think this way.

That got Elphaba thinking. "Do you have to escape from things often, on Ryloth?"

"I wouldn't be stuck here if I'd been better at it," she replied a little bitterly.

"You're a prisoner here?" Elphaba said. And then she gasped, and spoke again. "A slave?"

Elphaba glanced over at Jabba and frowned. "I wish I could help," she said.

Though she wondered if she could coordinate all the other students and perhaps they could do something to free the place of its squalor and injustice.
