Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

[Open! And listening to Simon and Garfunkel.]

//Not anymore,// Jono replied. //I shovelled it out in order to make room for Pearl Jam lyrics, years ago.//

He had priorities, clearly.

//Yer going to have to help me along with this one, I think.//

"Why waste time telling you?" she asked, amused. "Now you can worry about it."

//Th'worry is half the punishment!// Jono was nearly laughing, now. As close as Jono ever could get, at least. //Just for that, whatever it is I'm worrying about better be blooy tame, luv. Bloody tame, indeed.//

"Do you really think I would tell you either way?"

Because, well...

//No, no, that would be entirely too easy, wouldn't it?//

And where would the fun be, right?

//Do you want th'third book for yer stupid faeries series or not?//

"I do," she sniffed, "and I've the second book for your edification."

//Brilliant.//

He was thrilled. Really.

//I've actually got th'third on hold for you. Wasn't expecting you to actually come for it, but then...// Well, he didn't want to have to go down that aisle and face down those sparkly covers any more than he absolutely had to.

"I came in order to ascertain you were still working," Rosalind replied loftily.

Or because he'd actually cared enough to track her down when she hadn't and so now she felt she had to, in a way.

"But I'll take the third book." For her hour a week of pointless entertainment.

//Really, yer putting me to work by making me get th'book for you,// he observed. //Next, you'll be demanding interpretive readings, won't you? I know how these things work.//

She pursed her lips, eyes amused--for Rosalind.

"Are you volunteering?" Dry dry dry!

//That depends entirely on what sort of affect doing so would have on my punishment,// Jono replied, sticking his nose into the air.

... So... It was possible that he was volunteering, yes.

"It might have the effect of lessening the severity of your punishment."

Because this could not be passed up.

//It might, mm?// Jono took a moment to look as though perhaps he was thinking it over. Really. Very hard, in fact. //Fine, then. Should I start with th'second book, or th'third?//

"The second," Rosalind decided, after a moment's thought. So he wouldn't be spoilt for things happening later on.

//And you don't mind suffering through that drivel a second time?//

This time, there was a laugh to go with that statement. A light tremble in his shoulders was the best that he could manage physically, but there were layers of notions beyond his words, that just stated, big and bold, laughter.

Which meant she utterly had to lean over to attempt to whack him smartly across the top of his head.

"It will cause you more pain than I."

Mmmm denial.

//I shall have to attempt particularly terrible accents, you know,// Jonothon decided, ducking just enough to only get the lightest of bonks to the noggin. Yesterday had been long and tiring, and he wasn't exactly in the mood for a headache that he couldn't take an aspirin for, just yet. //American. German. Perhaps some particularly awful French. It doesn't matter if you don't know th'difference. I promise, you'll be entertained.//

He'd bring the throwing tomatoes.

"Perhaps I'll invite a few others," she mused urbanely. "Hold a meeting for your dramatic readings."

//Well, if that's th'case, we'd have to start at th'first book all over again, wouldn't we? We wouldn't want anybody else to miss out on that stirring scene where she leaps out th'bathroom window, after all.//

Really, Jonothon only raised important points, Rosalind.

Of course he did. Which was why she was biting back a tiny grin.

"If you were to insist, of course, then we'd have to start that way."

//I mean, if it came down to that, I might just have to play it out in pantomime,// Jono continued. //I'll climb up onto th'desk before she takes her magical first leap, and all.//

No, he wouldn't.

"Will you have wings?" she asked, amused. "I believe stores are selling them for some... holiday?"

//Oh, I don't know. I don't think I wear sequins and glitter so well, really.//

Although it was kind of tempting.

And Halloween this year was on a Sunday...

"But you'd be more in character," Rosalind pointed out, smirking a bit. "Which would likely improve your performance."

//Perhaps,// Jono allowed. //For special occasions. After all, I'm a musician, not a thespian, luv.//

Jono just liked the word 'thespian.'
