Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

[Open! And listening to Simon and Garfunkel.]

It really did explain everything, didn't it? Jono had certainly thought so, at least. It explained how John could get Sherlock to recognize 'bad things' with a glance, at least.

In Jono's head, John totally had Sherlock whipped, yes.

//Charming, innit? They were just making plans for Chinese food in Baltimore.//

"I-- it is not a date," John said, mostly because Jono had been the last one to speak. It came with less conviction than it used to, though, not because it was any less true, but because John had had to sit through one too many dinners with restaurant owners who refused to believe he and Sherlock weren't dating. "Flatmates," he said. Firmly.

"Together?" Sherlock asked, focus back on Raven before glancing over at Jono again. "Yes, I suppose that's the easy conclusion to draw. Incorrect as it may be."

"Did I mention I am an empath?" Raven said, more amused than she should have allowed herself to be. "I am able to sense feelings of others."

//Oh, Raven, luv,// Jono almost moaned in an aside just to her, //don't let him know that. Next, he'll he prodding at you and asking you to tell him what he ate for dinner a week ago Tuesday.//

And then, on an open thread again, he added, //Welcome to Fandom.//

And a shrug. Very what-do-you-do-about-it.

"I am not dating him!"

Because John was obviously focused on the important things in life.

"Yes, I gathered as much," Sherlock replied dryly. "But thank you for that confirmation. And it's as John says. I'm sure he'll find a nice woman to chat up tonight to make up for this, though."

"Denial is an uncomfortable thing," Raven said. John had been pleasant to her, so she didn't exactly relish making him more uncomfortable, but she also felt the perverse desire to try to make Sherlock squirm like he'd done to her. She'd feel bad about it. Later.

She gave Sherlock a curious glance. "I told you your feelings seemed blunted to me," she said thoughtfully. "But for Dr. Watson, they are much more...vibrant."

"They do?" Not the point, John. "...Nevermind that," John said, closing his eyes and waving one hand at Raven. "No. Whatever you're thinking, no. I think we've been wasting enough of your time..."

//Oh, no, no, no waste of my time at all,// Jono admonished with a wave of his hand. //This is my job, after all. Helping people find books of interest. In fact, if you don't mind standing around for a few more moments, I could fire off an e-mail to th'library in Baltimore to spare you some work, to make certain they have all of their books on angry onions sitting out and waiting for you when you get there.//

He was helpful!

And being a complete bastard all at once.

Sherlock was busy giving Raven a sharp look. "Explain."

Poor, poor John.

"Oh, god," said John.

"It is difficult to describe unless you are an empath as well," Raven said, her expression serene. "The emotions of others are almost colorful to me. Full of flavor and texture. But yours...they are grey and dull. Except when you think of Dr. Watson; then they are much more vivid."

//Rainbow-like, would you say?//

There was a place in Special Hell with Jono's name on the door.

"Turn around, Jono. You're dumbing down the room," Sherlock snapped.

He frowned, looking over at John for a moment before his posture went stiff and almost, well, almost nervous.

"I believe we were getting lunch."

"Yes," John said, with a long, drawn out sigh. "Lunch. Can we please get a move on on that?"

Before he started to brain himself on one of the singing books, perhaps?

"Of course, I apologize for keeping you," Raven said. She was acutely aware of John's discomfort and felt a flash of guilt about him being collateral damage in her attempt to get back at Sherlock. Truly, she would have to meditate on her sudden pettiness later. "And I am sorry that I have upset you," she added softly.

... Oh, right. Yes. Raven being an empath meant that John's being upset was going to resonate, wasn't it? And about that, Jono felt guilty. He ran a hand through his hair, perhaps a little awkwardly.

//Apologies, John.//

The fact that Sherlock had looked a little uncomfortable there? That much, he was going to file away for later, so that he could be smug about it at another time.

"Er. It's fine, really," John said, quickly. "Just not-- yes."

He flashed Raven a quick smile. "It's all sorted," he assured her. "But we're going now, barring any attacks of Fandom, of course."

He smiled one last time, then turned 'round, towards the door.

Sherlock gave them both a sharp look that possibly promised something horrible in their future before stalking after him.

If there was a hand on John's back to guide him out the door, that was neither here nor there.
