Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

[Open! And listening to Simon and Garfunkel.]

"Only the letters, the language is for the most part familiar," he smiled. "That does sound like it could be enjoyable."

"That's right, it sounds the same." Scully tilted her head. "How are you finding the rest of Fandom, now that you've been here a few weeks? Did you join any of the clubs on Friday?"

"I did not," he shook his head. He'd been a little too lost in it and had let it pass him by. "I am enjoying discovering this place. There are many things foreign to me, but it is proving fascinating. I could have done without the flying fish, however."

Scully eyerolled in agreement at mention of those, and grimaced. "Everyone could. I got bit by one of them, then I stayed inside in case anyone needed medical help after they went out to shoot and hit and stab those little fiends."

He tilted his head. "You are a healer?"

"I have training in medical matters, yes." She smiled a little self-consciously. "I work at the clinic in town on Thursdays. It's usually just sprains and gremlin bites. I'm going to be a doctor when I graduate college. Um. That's about ten or twelve years down the road."

Please, let her not have to go through all that again... "Are you going to be in your military, when you go home?"

"That is a very long time," he said in surprise. "Would you work as an apprentice to another doctor?"

He nodded at her question. "I am already in the military."

"There would be four years of college, which I'm hoping to take early," so that she'd be ready for grad work when she graduated Fandom, "then four years of medical school. And yes, during that time, I'd study with many different doctors, so that I'd know the basics of each kind of medicine, and then specialize in my area for the last two. With an -- yes, close enough, apprenticeship, at a hospital. That could last another three years." Scully looked considering. "It's worth it, though. Difficult, but worth it." She perched her chin on her hand, considering him. "So are you an officer, yet? Or is there training for that?"

"That is a lot of studying, but it appears to be very thorough as well," he commented with some admiration. "It is good to be so certain of what you want to be."

"I am a ranger," he clarified. "I have no rank yet, but there is much training and if I prove myself in battle, I should be made Captain eventually."

"I've always known." Even the first time around. "I'm considering becoming a medical examiner, working with the police. Solving crimes with medical evidence."

10 years at the least before she could do that again, if this didn't get fixed.

"Rangers? What do they do?" Scully looked curious. "I'm afraid the words suggest park ranger here, someone who helps people in the forest, or takes care that it's not damaged." She paused. "Well, the Texas Rangers cover a very large area in law enforcement duties...>"

"You will have to tell me more when you have time how medicine can help solve crimes," he told her as he wasn't fully grasping what she meant.

"That would not be entirely incorrect," he said. He decided that it would get too complicated explaining her of the Dúnedain for now. "They're our units that are stationed in Ithilien. The terrain are mostly forests so most men have much knowledge of surviving in those woods. We hold off invading troops and protect Gondor's border."

"Ahh. Long-range too. Protect Gondor from what?" she asked. "And I could show you better than tell you, if you stopped by the Clinic sometime. It's easier with all the equipment and instruments to illustrate."

"Orcs for the most part," Faramir said. "I would like that, if it would not keep you too much from your work. I am certain you have more important matters to tend to."

"Orcs." Scully blinked. "I've never heard of those... and really, other people stop by all the time, it's fine. It's not often busy, if we're not in the middle of an invasion, and it gives me a chance to remember what we have in the labs that doesn't get used very often."

"Then consider yourself lucky that you have not. They bring nothing but destruction."

He smiled at her and nodded. "Then I shall visit you at the clinic. When are you there?"

Scully's expression sobered, and she nodded. "I will, then. And I'm there very early on Thursdays, and then after two in the afternoon. I have a couple classes right in the middle, and I'm usually there 'til sunset and the evening shift." She smiled. "It will be fun, and hopefully I won't bore you with it."

"I am certain that you will not," he assured her. "I must warn you that I might ask many questions. I know very little of the healing craft, and even less so of how it works here."

"And then you get into the Fandom variations, and people who can heal with a touch, or with magic, or by concentrating," Scully sighed. "I'll never master all of those, so I'm sticking to the one I can practice when I get home. I'll show you what should be possible anywhere, though, if you like."

"It would be greatly appreciated," he told her, smiling.
