Library [09/26]

There was music in the library today. It wasn't the same, loud, pervasive music that Jonothon normally opted to, however. Today it was almost like a whisper of music. Like a hundred little voices all joining together in song.

... Or, more accurately, the rustling of the pages of every book on the subject of music in the entire library, all rising up in glorious, but quiet, harmony.

They'd just finished Sound of Silence, and were moving on with Scarborough Fair when Jono came in, levelled that aisle with a look, and then shook his head and set to work shelving things. Occasionally, things that were singing at him.

Ah, Fandom.

//It is a fair bit of work,// Jono conceded. //I certainly didn't pick it up overnight, at any rate. I take it yer not a musician, then?//

"All fine things are, but they are worth it," Faramir told him, and he should his head.

"I am not. I never was given much opportunity to learn, but I enjoy listening to people who do have the skill."

//Well, if you ever have the opportunity, you should stop by th'shop when I'm in, then,// Jono replied. //I've almost always got one guitar or another with me there on Tuesdays. And there's probably a good deal more variety of music there than you'd ever imagined, as well.//

Trust Jonothon. He knew these things.

It was a bit of a trend, he found, with new students who weren't from Earth.

"I would like that very much," Faramir agreed with a smile. "I listened to what you called the radio, but it wasn't so much singing as the people seemed to be shouting. I think I prefer Bruce's classical music."

See? He was learning slowly.

//Classical, hm? I suppose I can manage that.// A pause for consideration. //Or more music like this, perhaps? You might enjoy a bit of th'softer folk music that Earth has to offer...//

Careful, Faramir. If you walked into Groovy Tunes on Tuesday, Jono might have a playlist prepared for you.

"I would like to hear all sorts of music," Faramir told him instantly. "It might be that not all are to my liking, but I would like to hear it nonetheless."

And now, Faramir was doomed. Poor Faramir.

//Well, then! Come and pay me a visit at th'Groovy Tunes, and I'll see what I can put together for you, mate.// You've just gone and made Jono's day. //In th'meantime, was there anything in particular that you came in for, today?//

Perhaps he was, but Faramir would meet his doom steadily. Even this one.

"I will do so," he promised. "There was, I am thinking I would like to try my hand at reading some fairly easy books."

//Easy ones?// Jono glanced toward the children's section, and then he shrugged a little. They were easy, after all. //I'm certain we've got something you can manage. You... won't be horribly offended if I start you on some children's literature, and we can work yer way up from there?//

"I will not," Faramir assured him, a little amused. "We do not have books specifically for children. It should be interesting to see what they are taught."

Jono was going to skip right on over See Spot Run and Pat The Bunny, perhaps...

//Plenty of it is fiction,// he noted, making his way to the children's books. //Fantasy tales about fuzzy ducklings and bears on bicycles, really. But it isn't a bad place to start to see if you've got phonics under control before moving up. We might have you reading short novels, yet.//

"And poetry, perhaps?" Faramir asked as he followed Jonothon along. "I do not see how a bear would fit on a bicycle."

//And poetry,// Jono promised. //Even if at first, th'most you might be comfortable with is, 'I will not, will not with a fox, I will not, will not in a box. I will not eat them here or there, I will not eat them anywhere.'//

He'd stop that right there before he was forced to explain just why the eggs and ham were that colour.

"Even if it is that at first," Faramir agreed with a note of amusement. "It sounds very different from the poetry I know."

//I imagine it would be,// Jono replied, chuckling a little somewhere in that statement. //It's intended to hold the attention of five-year-olds. It's generally mostly nonsense, really. But at least it's fun.//

He bent over and grabbed a copy of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish from the shelf and offered it to Faramir. Since they were already on the topic of Seuss, and all. //How is this, mate?//

"Fish?" Faramir opened the book, amused at the drawings. "It will do well. Do many children read these?"

//It's what I would've grown up reading, if my parents had been th'sort to buy me books,// Jono replied with a shrug. //Once children are old enough for school, at least, they'll probably be exposed to books like this. It's all fun and colour and nursery rhymes, at that age.//

"It would be more interesting to a child than history records," Faramir agreed. "We would be told stories of heroes and kings long gone."

//We've got a few stories about kings long gone, as well,// Jono noted, //but they've been gone so long, it's difficult to tell where th'fact ends, and the mythology steps in.//

Jono's brain had melted a little when he'd learned about Arthur and Merlin, yes.

"Details are lost, but when I looked at the records we have of those times, most of the stories seemed to ring true," Faramir replied. "Perhaps later, you can show me one of those books?"

//It would be a pleasure,// Jono replied, nodding a little. //We'll work yer way up to it, but I can't see it taking too long to get you to that point, really. Reading is easier to pick up than writing, I think.//

"I am trying to copy words sometimes, but for taking notes it is much easier to use my own script," Faramir agreed. "It has the advantage now that no one here could decipher it."

//I suppose there's that,// Jono agreed, bemused. //No chance somebody is going to try to copy from yer work, at least.//

"Now if only I had a secret to keep. I find myself sourly lacking the ability to take advantage of this situation," he joked.

//This is Fandom,// Jono laughed. //Give it time, mate. We've all got our share of secrets to keep around here, I'm sure you'll end up with one eventually.//
