Library [09/05]

After last week's busy shift in the library, and a particularly active week besides, Jono was very much not in a state of mind to go above and beyond the call for the job, today. He was here, and he was attempting to shelve things when he saw things that needed to be shelved, and now and again he'd pick up a rag and try to dust.

But, well, he never got too far in any one task, because there were some very industrious helping hands hanging around, grabbing books and rags and anything else that he could get into before he could get into very much at all. And then patting him on the shoulder or the head or the ankle, wherever a disembodied hand happened to be able to reach from their particular vantage point, and pointing back toward the desk.

He would have decided that they were being condescending, if not for the fact that he was fairly inclined to just sit and do a whole lot of nothing in particular today anyhow.

He's all but given up on getting any work of his own done today, and so he's settled in with a terrible book to read. The kind of book that you hide inside of another, less stupid looking book while you flip through it in public, so that people don't ask questions.

Faramir returned to the library early that morning. He had a few sheets of paper with him, covered in English words with a Sindarin equivalent beside them.

"Good morning, Jonothon," he greeted when he found the library aide.

//Faramir.// Jono was all too happy to close his book-in-a-book and put it down for the time being, yes. Especially if doing so meant that he'd actually get to to something resembling work without those creepy little hands taking over from there. //How are those lessons working out for you, mate?//

"Slower than I would like," Faramir admitted with a crooked smile, "but they are helping. I will have to be patient."

There, their, and they're, anybody? Its and it's? And how red and read rhymed, except for when they didn't?

"It should never be too easy, that would defeat the challenge," Faramir reasoned. "I was actually hoping you would have a moment to help me. There are more than a few words which I don't understand."

No, really. If he so much as twitched toward anything that resembled work, it got snatched away. He was free to explain anything that Faramir could throw at him.

"Then I am fortunate," Faramir said with some relief. He held out the papers for Jonothon to take from him. Every line had a word on it which he'd copied carefully from the book, their translation in the Quenya script stood beside it.

"I believe they might be items such as the phones you have," he explained. "Some are expressions or words that I know, but their meaning makes no sense in their context. I can guess to their meanings, but I would like to make certain."

Jonothon looked over the list, raising his eyebrows a little bit as he did so. Perhaps he should have gotten Faramir a children's picture book to go along with this, at least so that he could confirm that things like planes and trains and automobiles weren't something that he'd be familiar with back home.

It wasn't an imposing list, really, but it certainly helped to give Jono a decent idea as to what Faramir's world was like.

Because 'please don't poke at this, Sherlock' apperently meant 'LOOK AT THIS! LOOOOK AT IIIIIT' to the man, Sherlock was once more int he library on Jono's day.

"I've been warned not to talk to you." Oh, don't sound so amused, Sherlock.

And now Jono was slinking down behind the desk a little. As if that would save him from the terror that was Sherlock Holmes.

"As seriously as I always take warnings." Which is to say he completely ignored it. "So, are you really so fragile that you need the librarian to defend you?"

"The librarian called you a mutant," Sherlock replied, looking at the stacks of books as though they might hold an answer to that question. Then, promptly returned his attention to Jono like he was a particularly fun little puzzle.

Which Jonothon was thrilled about! Really!

//That's th'common term for it, I suppose.// And now he was directing his glowering elsewhere completely. Toward a wall. Toward a window. Possibly contemplating a quick escape by fleeing for the door. //And...?//

Raven came by in the afternoon, after returning from Oklahoma. "Hello, Jono," she said pleasantly. "How are you today?"

There were probably not words to describe just how thankful Jono was to see somebody in on his shift who was not only familiar, but also sane. So thank you, Raven, from the bottom of Jono's bio-nuclear psionic flaming lack of a heart, for not being Holmes.

//I can think of worse days offhand,// he noted, nodding up at her. //I think today, I'll settle for 'lazy,' if I can get away with it at all. Yerself?//

Raven hadn't met Holmes yet. It probably wouldn't go well.

"I am...." Please forgive her, the disembodied hands had just caught her attention. She hadn't seen them yet due to being off island. "Hands," she said, doing a quick check to make sure Jono's were still attached and weren't the ones scurrying about.

Jonothon's hands were, fortunately, there and accounted for. He even held them up and gave his fingers a wiggle to demonstrate.

One of the Things gave them a little thumbs-up before grabbing a bottle of Windex from behind the desk and skittering off to clean windows.

"They seem to be being helpful," Raven said, watching the hand get to work on the windows. She looked back to Jono. "I am well," she said, finally finishing her sentence. "The first week of classes is behind me and I do not seem to have any that I find myself wondering why I was assigned to be in it this time."

Mine both seemed to go well enough for my taste, as well. You were right, gel. Professor Skywalker does seem to have a good head on his shoulders.//

"He has taught me so much," Raven said, beaming happily. "I did not know much of shielding myself from the emotions of others before I came here, for I had no need to do so in Azarath, but now I am much better at it. And as of late he has been working with me about controlling my temper."

Jonothon nodded, thoughtfully recalling that sense of reassurance that he'd felt in class on Thursday. The possibility of Professor Skywalker teaching Raven how to focus her own powers was an intriguing one, but it didn't surprise him, really, either.

//You know, since coming here, I haven't really had a relationship with a teacher like that,// he noted, idly. //My last school seemed closer to it. Two teachers and a small handful of students made it far simpler for them to put more care into taking care of everybody's individual concerns.//
