Library [09/05]

After last week's busy shift in the library, and a particularly active week besides, Jono was very much not in a state of mind to go above and beyond the call for the job, today. He was here, and he was attempting to shelve things when he saw things that needed to be shelved, and now and again he'd pick up a rag and try to dust.

But, well, he never got too far in any one task, because there were some very industrious helping hands hanging around, grabbing books and rags and anything else that he could get into before he could get into very much at all. And then patting him on the shoulder or the head or the ankle, wherever a disembodied hand happened to be able to reach from their particular vantage point, and pointing back toward the desk.

He would have decided that they were being condescending, if not for the fact that he was fairly inclined to just sit and do a whole lot of nothing in particular today anyhow.

Because 'please don't poke at this, Sherlock' apperently meant 'LOOK AT THIS! LOOOOK AT IIIIIT' to the man, Sherlock was once more int he library on Jono's day.

"I've been warned not to talk to you." Oh, don't sound so amused, Sherlock.

And now Jono was slinking down behind the desk a little. As if that would save him from the terror that was Sherlock Holmes.

//I can tell already that yer taking that warning seriously,// he observed.

"As seriously as I always take warnings." Which is to say he completely ignored it. "So, are you really so fragile that you need the librarian to defend you?"

//Not... really.//

Maybe. A little. But it wasn't as though he'd asked Henry to step up to defend him!

... He was also not complaining, mind.

//It had been a bad week.//

Understatement ahoy!

"Yes, I know," Sherlock replied dryly. Which made it so much better.

Oh, so very much better! You could tell that Jono was satisfied by the way he was glowering.

//I don't suppose there's anything that I can help you with? I understand that t'Dewey Decimal System can be a bit daunting, after all.//

"The librarian called you a mutant," Sherlock replied, looking at the stacks of books as though they might hold an answer to that question. Then, promptly returned his attention to Jono like he was a particularly fun little puzzle.

Which Jonothon was thrilled about! Really!

//That's th'common term for it, I suppose.// And now he was directing his glowering elsewhere completely. Toward a wall. Toward a window. Possibly contemplating a quick escape by fleeing for the door. //And...?//

"So what is the uncommon term for it?"

Jono just barely managed to refrain from answering with 'being a malformed freak.' Barely.

//Homo Sapiens Superior,// he replied, trying to keep a biting sort of tone from his voice and mostly failing. //Very Darwinian. I'm certain it would be right up yer alley.//

"Yes, it would be," Sherlock replied distractedly. "I gather it's common enough where you are from to have a distinct branch of the species named."

//Common enough that people know what it is to see it, and tend not to ask questions,// Jono replied, narrowing his eyes a bit.

It was kind of intended to be a hint, but he had his doubts that Sherlock would interpret it as one.

"Why not?"

See? See? He'd called that one! He'd be proud of himself later, if he didn't concuss himself by thumping his forehead against the top of his desk, first.

//Th'novelty wore off fast. People stopped worrying about why some people were different, and started focusing on ways to make it go away, instead.//

Sherlock hummed thoughtfully. "Yes, people can be so dull about these things."

//I suppose that's one word for it. There are mutants who might disagree.//

Sentinels were many, many things. But they were hardly what Jonothon would consider dull.

"Are you among them?"

See, this was only going to make him ask more.

And so long as the conversation was about the state of affairs of mutants in general, Jono could even handle it with some sense of diplomacy.

It beat asking him about when he'd lost his jaw, after all.

Which was helpful, you see. Terribly helpful.

"And there are others like you on the island." That much was obvious.

//Perhaps there are,// Jonothon allowed. //Though I can't imagine any one situation where any of them might appreciate my telling th'likes of you who they are.//

"Me?" Oh, that hurt.

Really.

...okay, not really.

//Anybody who would love nothing more than to lay one of us out on some surgery table and take a scalpel to us to see what makes us work,// Jono clarified, giving in to his flair for the over-dramatic.

Sherlock paused for a moment as if to consider it. "Do you always associate curiosity with autopsy?"

...not that he wouldn't love to get a crack at someone like that, mind.

And when Sherlock went and phrased it like that, Jono actually almost felt foolish about doing so. Until he reminded himself of organizations that did just that, and worse.

//I like to think of it as a precautionary measure,// he hedged, glancing at Sherlock, almost as if daring him to say something about it. //It isn't unheard of.//

"And you have experience with it."
