When all the students had finished filing into class, they might notice a man sitting at the teacher's desk, busy on his mobile phone. Presumably, their esteemed teacher. Esteemed.

Yes.

"This is the Science of Deduction," he said, not looking up from whatever he was working on. For all they knew, it was a rousing game of Tetris. "If you're uncertain as to whether or not you belong here or if you are only in this class to make your parents leave you alone, the answer is no. The door is to your right. I'm sure we'd all appreciate you leave before you waste our time. I know I will."

There was a pause as he waited for anyone to take that offer. It was the kind thing to do, right?

"Let's begin with me saying that I'd rather not be teaching you," Sherlock said, closing the phone and placing it on the desk. Brutal honesty was always the best when dealing with teenagers. Really. "I have it on good authority that I'm not good at dealing with children or idiots. Both of which are in the room at the moment. Outside the classroom as well, but we're not focusing on that at the moment."

He shrugged because what could you do?

"My name is Sherlock Holmes and yes, I am already aware that I share a name and an alarming number of characteristics with a fellow from Victorian England. Any comments about it and you will be assisting me with my experiments. Always pleased to have live subjects for a change."

Oh, if only that was a lie.

"So, let's begin, shall we?"

"Dana Scully." She already had her computer out and was taking a few notes. The name had made her blink, hard. Mulder would have a cow.

Diana's brain short circuited for a moment and only the fact that she had met Arthur last year kept her from squeeing. "Diana Hansen."

Emma had yanked her shields up high the moment the teacher started in on Bruce, in case he was some sort of telepath himself and she just hadn't sensed him.

"Frost," she said, her face and tone schooled to pleasant neutrality. "Emma Frost."

Gabrielle was impressed. This was a Xena level of many-skills in the deduction department from the guy who'd been having a rather heated discussion with her library boss the other day, and her eyes were wide as she stood up.

"Gabrielle," she answered simply.

Yet another class that Cally might have chosen to take if it hadn't been chosen for her, though this one was more likely to have some sort of analogue at home.

This teacher, though... she wasn't sure he had an analogue anywhere aside from the diagnostic medicine team at Princeton‑Plainsboro hospital.

"My name is Cally," she said simply, waiting to hear what he had to say.

"Rinoa Heartilly," she said. The rest, he could work out himself, if he was so smart.

"Parker," Parker said, with just a hint of a smile. The teacher's manner was abrasive, but Parker liked it. He was blunt and honest; Parker could do blunt and honest with far more ease than tact and subtle.

Now this was...interesting. For a moment, Ariel frowned in concern, wondering just how accurate this guy was, but, really, now, if he looked at her and said the m-word, who was going to believe him?

"Ariel," she said, lifting her chin and smiling brilliantly.

Ellie listened to the comments about her classmates, impressed. When it was her turn, though, she was a bit wary.

"Ellie Bartowski," she said, trying to sound confident.

Ben had been on the receiving end of more brutal interrogations than this, so he wasn't sure why his classmates were so nervous.

Perhaps growing up around people who could read his moods and thoughts gave him him a different perspective, too.

"I'm Ben Skywalker," he said with a small smile.

Fascinated by a teacher who didn't want to teach, Momoko wondered what he could tell from just hearing her name and if she'd be able to do that by the end of the semester.

"Momoko! Momoko Akatsutsumi!" She smiled and she leaned forward eagerly, waiting.

William recovered from the moment of bogglement that had accompanied being named a TA, and was now actually feeling rather pleased about the whole affair.

He supposed this meant he'd really have to get moving on that whole "getting a mobile phone" thing, though.
