When all the students had finished filing into class, they might notice a man sitting at the teacher's desk, busy on his mobile phone. Presumably, their esteemed teacher. Esteemed.

Yes.

"This is the Science of Deduction," he said, not looking up from whatever he was working on. For all they knew, it was a rousing game of Tetris. "If you're uncertain as to whether or not you belong here or if you are only in this class to make your parents leave you alone, the answer is no. The door is to your right. I'm sure we'd all appreciate you leave before you waste our time. I know I will."

There was a pause as he waited for anyone to take that offer. It was the kind thing to do, right?

"Let's begin with me saying that I'd rather not be teaching you," Sherlock said, closing the phone and placing it on the desk. Brutal honesty was always the best when dealing with teenagers. Really. "I have it on good authority that I'm not good at dealing with children or idiots. Both of which are in the room at the moment. Outside the classroom as well, but we're not focusing on that at the moment."

He shrugged because what could you do?

"My name is Sherlock Holmes and yes, I am already aware that I share a name and an alarming number of characteristics with a fellow from Victorian England. Any comments about it and you will be assisting me with my experiments. Always pleased to have live subjects for a change."

Oh, if only that was a lie.

"So, let's begin, shall we?"

"Ender Wiggin," Ender replied, evenly. He'd seen Sherlock go about the others, but he hadn't budged by much.

Let's see what he could do, then.

"Child soldiers common where you're from?" Sherlock asked, only giving him a once over before going back to his phone.

"Yes and no," Ender returned. "Not as much as there used to be, but too many, according to some."

He didn't say anything else, but he was watching Sherlock closely himself.

"Informative," Sherlock replied. "Trust issues, I believe is the term."

From poor John's therapist.

"You'll find half the island has trust issues," Ender said. Respectfully.

For now, anyway.

"Does the deflection work often, it must."

"There are people who are a lot more interesting than me, professor Holmes," Ender said, with a slight smile. "Between the fact that your name's straight out of an old biography and your methods, I'd say you qualify as one."

"And yet none quite so avoidant. So what are you hiding from?" Sherlock asked, head tilted to the side.

For a moment, Ender looked startled. (Looked being the important word for it, although he was startled enough that he knew it wasn't acting. He knew enough empaths not to attempt simply acting)

"Look, I just--" he said, flicking his eyes down to the floor. "I don't like to talk about it," he settled on. "And you'd like me to keep talking. Don't. Let's just say government, and keep it at that, okay?"

Sherlock looked away after a moment, hands automatically going for his mobile like a comfort blanket.

"I suppose that will do for now," he said in a slightly more careful tone as he ran his fingers over the phone in an almost unconscious manner.

Somewhere in Ender's bag, his mobile buzzed.

Ender gave him a shallow little nod, and sank back into his chair.

It wasn't exactly hard to play that part. He knew well enough he'd been noticed, which was exactly what he'd been trying to avoid.

After a minute, he picked up his phone.

Well, at least it's not in public, this time, Ender thought morbidly.

He kept any annoyance or frustration under wraps this time, slanting a quick look at Ben.

Ben gave him a quick smile in return.

Of course he'd been watching.
