Ash's Art Appreciations, Lecture #4

*Ash stands in front of the classroom, scribbling notes on his clipboard until all the students settle in*

Alright, last week's lecture was a bit of traumatic experience for everyone, so today, I've prepared a special slide show.

*Dims the lights, and puts on a "Best of Cake" CD, and starts up the Slide Projector. The slide show is a series of photographs of puppies, small children, women in bikinis, rainbows, women in bikinis with guns, kittens, and flowers*

*After the presentation, he turns the lights back up, and shuts off the music*

Alright, the discussion topic: "Is Photography Art?"

Go ahead and duke it out, kids.

"Photography can be art -- like pretty much everything can." Jake looked like he wasn't entirely sure whether he wanted to laugh or bury his head in his hands.

"I be a agreein' wit' Jake," Barbossa said. "It be about composition 'n lightin' 'n the proper subject t' be photographin' 'n such, right?"

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, yeah." Jake nodded. "What makes it go from, like, family album photos to art is about all of that. Together. But, like, proper photographers don't take just that one shot, and then go home. They take loads."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why does that make it art though?" Krycek asked, glad to be having a discussion that didn't involve macaroni or nudity.

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake shrugged. "It just does. Well, taking lots of photos mean they can pick and choose, right? So they find that one shot where everything was right. Instead of, like, family photos where you get the one where everything went wrong."

"Provenance." Callist chipped in, head still firmly planted on the table. "It helps establish provenance."

Headdesking, Callisto was starting to wonder whether Bad Ash had really been that bad.

"Yes. Man Ray."

After class...

Marty wanders over to Callisto after class.

"Hey Callisto? Do you have a few minutes?"

Callisto looks up. "Sure, Marty."

"I've been looking into that whole 'fear gas' thing last week that happened in Spike's Pub. You know anything about it?"

"Not much apart from the fact that it made Professor Beeblebrox nearly destroy the town, rumours and hearsay mostly."

[identity profile] defiantlyyours.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. Why wouldn't it be?

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Marty approaches 6 with his digital Camera.

"Hey 6? Can I get a picture of you for yearbook?"

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well... I'm not going to force you to have your picture taken. You do have a choice in the matter."

[identity profile] persian-eunuch.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, photography art.

Like paint or sculpture, it take skill and talent to make good.

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Marty just happens to have his new digital camera with him that he got for working on the yearbook and is taking pictures with it.

"Doesn't this go back to the whole soup can thing though Coach? Personally I think it is. Even if it's just a picture of friends and what not."

[identity profile] 12parseckessel.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be art. Most of it isn't, but every now and then you get one that just says more than the others.

[identity profile] neptune-wallace.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wallace pays more attention to the Cake cd than the photography. While everyone is discussing, he's still singing to himself. While Frank Sinatra sings 'Stormy Weather' the flies and spiders get along together....

[identity profile] lisacuddy.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Lisa looks at the photos of women with guns in bikinis and shakes her head. "Sure, art, why not?"

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Marty leans over to Cuddy during the slide show of rainbows and bikinis.

"Hey Cuddy, did you hear about that whole hallucinatory freak out scene last Wednesday at Spike's Pub?"

[identity profile] lisacuddy.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Rumors, like everything else at this school. But I wasn't there. Why, Detective Blank, are you hot on the case?" she smirks.

[identity profile] oatmanspatient.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right Mugsy. I'm covering all the angles." Marty says in a bad Bogart impersonation.

"I was wondering if you knew anyone who might be able to make a hallucineogenic drug that could be carried in a vial, dissapate into gas upon being released and cause people to experience some of their greatest fear for approximately 12-24 hours."

He shrugs. "I thought since you and Crane were so involved in the Science club you might know who could make such a thing."

She laughts out loud at his antics. "With all the people in and out of that lab, I wouldn't know..." Light dawns on Marblehead. "You have a suspect, don't you? Spill. Not for my own curiosity of course, I would never ask you to endanger your office for that." She snickers, "But if you want me to keep an eye out, I need to know what I'm looking for."
