Ash's Art Appreciations, Lecture #4

*Ash stands in front of the classroom, scribbling notes on his clipboard until all the students settle in*

Alright, last week's lecture was a bit of traumatic experience for everyone, so today, I've prepared a special slide show.

*Dims the lights, and puts on a "Best of Cake" CD, and starts up the Slide Projector. The slide show is a series of photographs of puppies, small children, women in bikinis, rainbows, women in bikinis with guns, kittens, and flowers*

*After the presentation, he turns the lights back up, and shuts off the music*

Alright, the discussion topic: "Is Photography Art?"

Go ahead and duke it out, kids.

"Photography can be art -- like pretty much everything can." Jake looked like he wasn't entirely sure whether he wanted to laugh or bury his head in his hands.

"I be a agreein' wit' Jake," Barbossa said. "It be about composition 'n lightin' 'n the proper subject t' be photographin' 'n such, right?"

"Well, yeah." Jake nodded. "What makes it go from, like, family album photos to art is about all of that. Together. But, like, proper photographers don't take just that one shot, and then go home. They take loads."

"Why does that make it art though?" Krycek asked, glad to be having a discussion that didn't involve macaroni or nudity.

Jake shrugged. "It just does. Well, taking lots of photos mean they can pick and choose, right? So they find that one shot where everything was right. Instead of, like, family photos where you get the one where everything went wrong."

"Provenance." Callist chipped in, head still firmly planted on the table. "It helps establish provenance."

Krycek glanced over at her. "Provenance would be more applicable to tying it to a certain artist, wouldn't it?"
