Magic of Baking: Week 5, Period 3

"Hopefully you all enjoyed your surprise week off last week," Alysha said once the class was assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry you missed a class though, and I'll see what I can do about making it up."

At each of the cooking stations was a saran-wrapped ball of pastry dough along with a rolling pin and mat and two pie plates. The island in the center of the room had a selection of fruits.

"What we're doing today is making pie," she explained. "Just basic fruit pie, nothing crazy. I've made everyone enough dough for a double crust pie - that's like an apple pie where there's the crust on the bottom and also covering the fruit. If you want to try your own pie crust as well, there's a recipe at your station that's pretty close to the one I use." Except the aunties would have a conniption fit at the idea of using shortening instead of lard in a pie crust. Thankfully they weren't there. No really, no one wanted that.

"First, go ahead and figure out what kind of pie you want to make. There's a bunch of different pie filling recipes up here to work from. Then roll out your pie crust, fill it, and pop it in the oven."

"As always, I'm around if you have any questions at all. I'd recommend the blueberries or rhubarb if you're not sure what fruit to use. They're both in season. Apple's always good too though."

He'd be incredibly smug if he thought he could mess up a telepath's reading. "Knowing my track record, you probably wouldn't want to fix it," he reasoned, but he couldn't help wondering if she even knew. Maybe... "Do you go to Caritas sometimes?"

"Once in a blue moon," she said, tilting her head. "And how do you know I won't want to fix it? I don't even know what 'it' is."

Look, he had this theory that Caritas was the bloodsucker lair of the island. Once in a blue moon didn't sound like she'd been there.

"Because this is the first time we've talked, why would you even want to fix something that bothers me?" he asked, gesturing with his apple at her.

"Maybe it's bothering other people who're too polite to say something," she said, shrugging.

"Doubt it," he sounded all too sure of it, but the quick grin that went along with it disappeared. He put the apple down and leaned forward, elbows resting on the tabletop as he studied her.

She didn't look like she was going to give it a rest and as much as he could rewind in his head that it was different here, it was going to keep bothering him. "Has anyone been bothering you?" Pause. "Besides me."

Well...yes. But she wasn't sure exactly what he thought he knew. "Bothering me how?" she asked, arching a brow. "No one here has, no."

Re: Bake! [6-9]

"No one here," he repeated. There was an emphasis there or he was dreaming there was one. "I mean bothering like..." Looking like they might want to suck your blood.

Ugh, he wasn't good at this beating around the bush. "Do you know any leech- vampires," he corrected himself, trying to bypass the usual explanation of what he meant.

She stared at him, because that was...interesting. "Maybe. How can you tell?" She wasn't sure what he was, though the mental static coming in was a pretty hefty indication that while Jacob wasn't a vampire himself, he stood a pretty good shot of being supernatural.

He was taking that as a yes and the way she was smelling, the leech must have been all over. He straightened up, deciding that maybe he wanted to try the peach pie instead.

"It's a thing."

"And it's a problem?" she prompted.

"I tend to think bloodsuckers are a problem, yes," he nodded, and Bella was going to have to stand on her head to convince him the Cullens weren't. A leech was a leech was a leech. "Even if around here, you apparently need to start making distinctions."

"Mm. One saved my life this weekend. So I tend to see it differently," she said curtly.

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Where had he heard that before? Oh right. He shook his head, squashing down on the natural response that came all too easily.

"No problem then," he said, a bit too short for that to be entirely true. "They're bad news where I'm from, so it just..." Made him paranoid. "Got me on guard."

"They're legal, law-abiding citizens where I'm from," she said with a shrug. "But if that's not the case with you, and they're dangerous, I can understand." Like with Kennedy and Tara's world. "Still not sure how you knew, but...no, no vampires have been bothering me. One just saved me from dying."

He was suddenly grateful he wasn't from her world then. Low-abiding citizens his ass.

"I told you it's a thing," he said with a quick grin. "That sounds like a sucky weekend," he added more seriously.

Sookie resisted the urge to pun off of that. "It was," she said simply. "I'm just glad he was there, honestly, even if I'm not sure how I feel about vampires in general."

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Which was probably good since it could have ended up being rather tragic.

"I thought you said they're law-abiding citizens," he remarked.

"Mine are, in my world," she replied. "As far as I know, anyway. I've only met the one. But the ones I've met here have been nice, and for every one I meet that's nice, I hear about a universe where they aren't. So. I'm not sure."

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well unless they actually don't have a desire to feed on humans, I'd say being suspicious is probably the way to go," he reasoned. "Even if they save your life."

Sometimes it was easy to think in black and white.

"They drink synthetic blood. They don't need to feed on us," she replied. "So. Mostly I'm just intimidated -- the ones I've met are strong, fast, can smell me, that kind of thing."

[THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH HAVING SIMILAR KEYWORDS FOR ICONS. Sigh.]

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He nodded, suddenly grateful he hadn't told her how he knew. "And yet somehow you're at a school where half of the students have some sort of power," he pointed out. "So does the synthetic blood thing work? Because I'd have thought it was an instinct thing."

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, don't get me wrong," she replied, shaking her head, "it's not the fact that they have powers that gets me. I do too. It's -- I'm a little less trusting, after the weekend. Wary, I guess you'd say."

She shook her head, and continued, "As for the synthetic blood, you can get it in different types -- O-negative, B-positive, et cetera -- and it comes in bottles and different brands. I'm sure there's an instinct thing involved, too, but the synthetic blood's the reason they came out and live among humans, now."

"Sure sure, that's got to be an improvement," he wrinkled his nose, having had his fair share of leeches living too damn close. "So you're wary despite that he saved you? You think he had an ulterior motive or something?"

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugged. "He did me a favor. But I don't know him well enough to trust him enough not to wear silver around him, you know?"

Re: Bake! [6-9]

[identity profile] need-no-moon.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"That works?" he asked instantly. Which wasn't her point. "Yeah, I know and if he ends up bothering you..." He trailed off. She got his drift right? It felt kind of weird offering, but then it was weirder not to.
