Magic of Baking: Week 5, Period 3

"Hopefully you all enjoyed your surprise week off last week," Alysha said once the class was assembled in the Home Ec room. "I'm sorry you missed a class though, and I'll see what I can do about making it up."

At each of the cooking stations was a saran-wrapped ball of pastry dough along with a rolling pin and mat and two pie plates. The island in the center of the room had a selection of fruits.

"What we're doing today is making pie," she explained. "Just basic fruit pie, nothing crazy. I've made everyone enough dough for a double crust pie - that's like an apple pie where there's the crust on the bottom and also covering the fruit. If you want to try your own pie crust as well, there's a recipe at your station that's pretty close to the one I use." Except the aunties would have a conniption fit at the idea of using shortening instead of lard in a pie crust. Thankfully they weren't there. No really, no one wanted that.

"First, go ahead and figure out what kind of pie you want to make. There's a bunch of different pie filling recipes up here to work from. Then roll out your pie crust, fill it, and pop it in the oven."

"As always, I'm around if you have any questions at all. I'd recommend the blueberries or rhubarb if you're not sure what fruit to use. They're both in season. Apple's always good too though."

Sookie took just a few seconds before deciding to make a strawberry (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Old-Fashioned-Strawberry-Pie/Detail.aspx) pie, and though she did use the crust Alysha had provided (it'd be a shame to waste, after all), she carefully cut half of it into strips in order to make a lattice top. It was prettier.

Sookie was sneaking bits of fruit when she thought no one was looking. She could just taste so much more of them these days. It was hard to resist.

"Did you do something new to your hair? It's so shiny," Rilla commented as she worked on a blueberry pie.

Mostly by eating the blueberries.

Jacob was trying to listen. Okay no, he wasn't. This class usually smelled good. There was food and it smelled nice and Jacob would be hungry half way through class. Except that now there was a different scent, one that made him wrinkle his nose and he was more trying to figure out where it came from than listen to what was being said.

Of all people, Sookie could not tell Rilla why she looked different. She just couldn't. She wouldn't be responsible for that kind of catatonia.

"I've just been getting lots of sleep," she told her. "I spent the weekend at home, and it agreed with me!"

It hadn't taken him too long to figure out exactly where the bloodsucker scent was coming from. Except that it wasn't really vampire, it didn't burn the back of his throat the way a leech would, but it was still unmistakeably leech related. A lingering scent like when Morgana borrowed some of Rose's clothes, except more poignant and he hadn't noticed it before.

Still, it was Fandom and Didi would kick his ass if he stirred. So he should stop frowning at his classmate and decide if he wanted peaches or apples.

Karla had actually been doing pretty well for herself--up until she forgot to slit the upper pie crust to let the steam escape.

The first sign that something was dreadfully amiss was the way the top crust started almost...pulsating.

The second sign was the pie practically exploding in the oven.

There was no third sign.

"Oh, that sounds lovely," Rilla said enthusiastically. "Do you have a lot of family?"

Sookie noticed the staring -- she'd gotten used to this kind of thing over the last week.

...except the odd thing was that he was frowning. This probably wasn't related to her super-shiny hair, or anything, and that was worrisome. "Something wrong?"

"Not much at all. Just my grandmother and my brother," she admitted. "Do you?"

Yeah, you smell like leech wasn't a good response, right? It was at the tip of his tongue anyway.

"No," he lied, shaking his head and he turned an apple around in his hands. The frown didn't go away. "Just something I hadn't noticed before."

Sookie didn't really believe that, no. Telepath, and all, and even if Jacob wasn't clear at all -- something was off about him, and he came in fuzzy -- she knew a lie when she heard one. "...what? I can't fix it if I don't know what it is."

"I'm the youngest of six," Rilla said with a little laugh, tossing her hair. "Plus Mother and Dad."

He'd be incredibly smug if he thought he could mess up a telepath's reading. "Knowing my track record, you probably wouldn't want to fix it," he reasoned, but he couldn't help wondering if she even knew. Maybe... "Do you go to Caritas sometimes?"

"I'm jealous," Sookie admitted, grinning at her.
