Language Classes, Friday, Oct. 21

As he did last Friday, Dream has stocked the table at the front of the room with candy, popcorn and sodas and rolled in a large-screen TV.

Hello.

We are watching movies again today. Classics students, here is a filmed production of Oedipus Rex. I was not satisfied with the filmed versions of the play that I could find in this world; here is one pulled from the dreams of Sophocles.

Languages of Asia students, we will continue Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from last week. You should be able to pick out certain words and phrases in the dialogue, though Mandarin and Cantonese are quite different.

As always, I remind you that I will pay special attention to students who fall asleep during the films.

Thomasina signs the roster and takes her seat. She is absolutely thrilled by the idea of getting to see a production of Oedipus Rex as it would have been staged by Sophocles, himself.

Sam signs in and wishes idly that Daniel was a student as she watches, armed with a large cup of coffee. He'd probably get a big kick out of this film.

She looks around for Janet, but then remembers that her friend is now in Ethics on Fridays at this time.

Evelyn entered with her head down and signed in. She took a seat at the back of the class and kept her head down.

Sam notices Evelyn and writes a note:

Evie? What happened yesterday? Are you okay? I got your phone call, but you ran off without telling me where you were going, so I couldn't help.

Evelyn's eyes fill with tears when she reads the note. She hadn't meant to worry anyone.

Sam...I'm not sure what happened yesterday or what I might have said. It appears that I was drugged with some sort of toxin that had me acting strangely and had me terrified. I am so sorry, Sam.

Sam reads the note, shaking her head.

As long as you're sure you're fine now, I'm not at all worried. Next time just try and tell me where you are, okay? We're good, see?

She gives Evie a smile as she hands the note over.

Murphy signs in and takes his seat.

He falls asleep about five minutes into the movie.

It's shifting around in the way dreams do; one moment a deserted stretch of highway, the next the sterile white of a hospital.

Murphy is wandering through them all, older, a slow trickle of blood falling down the right side of his face.

It's obvious he's calling out to someone, but there is no sound.

Sam waves, then rolls her eyes and mouths "Daniel would love this."

Jack gets out a piece of paper from his notebook and scribbles something on it before crumpling it up and tossing it to Carter.

You mean he'd love to be sitting here bitching about everything they get wrong.

Connor sits next to his brother, with a cup of steaming coffee meant to keep him awake.

Murphy didn't think to bring coffee. Not that it would have helped any, as dull as this movie seems.

He's asleep within five minutes.

By the time Connor thinks to offer Murphy his coffee, Murphy is already asleep. Connor shrugs and keeps his attnention on the movie.

Sonia signs in and, though she's fascinated by the amazingly accurate details and unique performance of the play, the past week is finally catching up to her, and her eyes slide shut. She's not fully asleep, but halfway on that border between conciousness and the dreamworld. She hears the sounds from the TV, but her subconcious is calling up images quite different from those of the play.

With the sounds of chaos coming from the screen- namely, Jocasta's cries upon the discovery of her son's identity- brings a particular memory to the forefront of Sonia's mind.

Before her, the ominous silhouette of a castle rises against a dark red sky. The air is thick with smoke, and smells of decay and death, and she can feel a wave of heat pulsing at her back.

In an instant, the scene changes, and she is walking towards a small, yet modest farmhouse in the rural countryside. An old man stands in the doorway, leaning on a crutch, and stares up at her with pleading eyes. She runs forward to embrace him, but when she reaches for him she notices that her hands are covered in blood. He shakes his head sadly, and she falls to her knees.

Again, there is a change of scenery, and now she kneels before two small headstones. A tiny cherub rests between the graves, and seems to watch her every movement. Someone behind her speaks: Savior of our people, powerless to stop him... She shakes her head furiously, her fingers digging into the dirt around her. She refuses to turn around.
