Language Classes, Friday, Oct. 21

As he did last Friday, Dream has stocked the table at the front of the room with candy, popcorn and sodas and rolled in a large-screen TV.

Hello.

We are watching movies again today. Classics students, here is a filmed production of Oedipus Rex. I was not satisfied with the filmed versions of the play that I could find in this world; here is one pulled from the dreams of Sophocles.

Languages of Asia students, we will continue Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from last week. You should be able to pick out certain words and phrases in the dialogue, though Mandarin and Cantonese are quite different.

As always, I remind you that I will pay special attention to students who fall asleep during the films.

{"I'm looking for an angel, sir,"} he says in Gaelic.

They're walking through a grimy alley now.

He pushes his hair back out of his eyes, showing that his wrist is bloody and torn. {"He's always saving me, but he won't let me save him."}

{"No more than this."} The other arm comes into view, that wrist equally mangled. {"I'd rather they were mine than his."}

There may be a shadow overhead.

He smiles and points up.

It's an figure, frozen seemingly in mid-flight.

The golden halo and flaming sword highlight the exact same wounds as Murphy has.

{"He's always been there. Ever since I took my first breath."} Slight quirk of the head. {"This hasn't happened yet, sir."}

There's an arm with the same injuries falling over Murphy's shoulder. It's attached to an equally older Connor, faint smile on his bloody face.

Connor speaks this time, in Latin. {"All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things will be well."}

Which gets a smile from Murphy. "Ya can't argue with that, aye? Thanks fer helpin' me find m' angel, sir."

They walk away, Connor's wings wrapping carefully around his twin.
