Language Classes, Friday, Oct. 21

As he did last Friday, Dream has stocked the table at the front of the room with candy, popcorn and sodas and rolled in a large-screen TV.

Hello.

We are watching movies again today. Classics students, here is a filmed production of Oedipus Rex. I was not satisfied with the filmed versions of the play that I could find in this world; here is one pulled from the dreams of Sophocles.

Languages of Asia students, we will continue Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from last week. You should be able to pick out certain words and phrases in the dialogue, though Mandarin and Cantonese are quite different.

As always, I remind you that I will pay special attention to students who fall asleep during the films.

Thomasina signs the roster and takes her seat. She is absolutely thrilled by the idea of getting to see a production of Oedipus Rex as it would have been staged by Sophocles, himself.

Sam signs in and wishes idly that Daniel was a student as she watches, armed with a large cup of coffee. He'd probably get a big kick out of this film.

She looks around for Janet, but then remembers that her friend is now in Ethics on Fridays at this time.

Evelyn entered with her head down and signed in. She took a seat at the back of the class and kept her head down.

Sam notices Evelyn and writes a note:

Evie? What happened yesterday? Are you okay? I got your phone call, but you ran off without telling me where you were going, so I couldn't help.

Evelyn's eyes fill with tears when she reads the note. She hadn't meant to worry anyone.

Sam...I'm not sure what happened yesterday or what I might have said. It appears that I was drugged with some sort of toxin that had me acting strangely and had me terrified. I am so sorry, Sam.

Murphy didn't think to bring coffee. Not that it would have helped any, as dull as this movie seems.

He's asleep within five minutes.

Sonia signs in and, though she's fascinated by the amazingly accurate details and unique performance of the play, the past week is finally catching up to her, and her eyes slide shut. She's not fully asleep, but halfway on that border between conciousness and the dreamworld. She hears the sounds from the TV, but her subconcious is calling up images quite different from those of the play.

"Professor?" Rory asks, approaching his desk. "May I ask you a question? It's for a journalism project."
