Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Hopefully things weren't so awkward before. Maybe things ended up well. Maybe, just maybe, you ended up meeting someone special.

Or you took your shirt off because Layla Miller convinced you it was destiny. But she's a damn dirty liar and well know it.

Christian, shirt still firmly in place (though he'd taken the liberty of disposing of his jacket and hat, since neither seemed to be de rigeur in this place) flopped down in a shady patch and pulled out a notebook. He wasn't writing very much, though; he was far more focused on people-watching.

Ben was heading back for more food when he saw a very familiar face.

"Obi-Wan?"

Christian glanced to either side, then to behind him, looking for anyone who might seem like an obiwan, whatever that was.

He saw nothing, so: "Excuse me, are you talking to me?"

Ben nodded. "You're not a Jedi, are you?" he asked, turning a little red.

"I don't know what one is, so I'll have to say no," Christian said, then offered a hand. "My name is Christian. I just got here this morning."

Ben shook the offered hand. "Ben. Nice to meet you. You look a little like someone famous at home."

"Do I?" Christian had never heard that before, and it was a pleasing kind of novelty. "I hope he's at least famous for something good ... where is home for you?"

Ben sounded like, he, at least, might be English.

"Far, far away," Ben said with a smile. "The accent is just remarkably similar to yours."

Christian considered this, then ventured: "Australia?"

Kate? Apparently pretty good at sneaking up on people. Even those currently not in a crowd.

Which was to say she was pretty much standing behind Christian's back – in her skimpy top and short skirt, which deserved to be mentioned – as she asked, "Are you writing at the welcome picnic? You're gonna get mistaken for an old student."

Christian looked at her owlishly for several seconds, trying to decide if she'd intentionally gone out in her underthings.

He decided that if these were American styles, so be it. He wasn't exactly offended.

"How bad would that be?" he asked, clearing his throat. "I'd rather look like I fit in than seem to reek of being new."

"It's not like you're the only new kid today," Kate pointed out. "And if you have total new kid shine on you, people will come traumatize you with stories of Fandom, so you maybe won't have freak out too bad first time the island does something weird to you."

She was kind of making this reasoning up on the spot, really.

"... did you say the island does things to people?"

Christian's big sibling had been Alex Karev. Strangely enough, Alex was not tremendously invested in playing helpful tour guide.

"Uh, yeah," Kate said, raising an eyebrow. "Shouldn't your big sib have covered that? Because that's like, the first thing people need to know about this place."

No, she would not be surprised to find out who it was that hadn't been telling Christian much.

Christian gave a tight smile. "I couldn't say. Mine spent his time mocking my hat and telling me about girls getting into fights. Alex Karev?"

"Alex is your big bro?"

Okay, so Kate was a little surprised. Not by Alex doing a poor job, but by him having ended up as a fake big sib in the first place.

"Oh you poor kid. So, has anyone actually been telling you anything about Fandom?"

Christian considered this carefully. "I found out I look like someone who's something called a Jedi," he answered. "And that you have very fast, very large horseless carriages."

As if enough people hadn't made this mistake already, but now it was Leia's turn. She did a double-take as she happened by. "Master Kenobi?" she said, staring.

"... who?" Christian was confused, but not as confused as he had been when Ben stopped by. "I'm sorry. Is this about the -- Jedi thing? That isn't me, I'm afraid."

"You look exactly like him," Leia said. "You must've run into members of my family already if you know what a Jedi is. I'm Leia." She offered him her hand.

"Christian," Christian said, hesitating a second -- handshakes were mostly for men in his world -- but shaking the hand. "A pleasure to meet you. I only know a bit about what a Jedi is, really. I'd love to hear it from you."

This had almost nothing to do with the fact Leia was a pretty girl. Really.

"And I'd love to tell you," Leia said, smiling. Which had nothing to do with the fact that Christian looked like Obi-Wan Kenobi, swooooon. "Who have you talked to already, and what did they tell you?"

"Just the word and that you're from far away but some of you have my accent," Christian said vaguely ~~since the thread is still in progress~~. "I met a boy named Ben, if you know him?"

"Ben is my nephew," Leia said, nodding. "He's a Jedi, and so is my father, who's a teacher here. And Jaina and Tahiri, if you've met them yet." She left out the part about Jaina being her daughter for now, because there was only so much you could do to break someone's brain on the first day.

Christian shook his head; he hadn't met Jaina or Tahiri. "So what does being a Jedi mean?" he asked. "Is it a religion, or a country, or...?"
