Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Hopefully things weren't so awkward before. Maybe things ended up well. Maybe, just maybe, you ended up meeting someone special.

Or you took your shirt off because Layla Miller convinced you it was destiny. But she's a damn dirty liar and well know it.

"Uh, yeah," Kate said, raising an eyebrow. "Shouldn't your big sib have covered that? Because that's like, the first thing people need to know about this place."

No, she would not be surprised to find out who it was that hadn't been telling Christian much.

Christian gave a tight smile. "I couldn't say. Mine spent his time mocking my hat and telling me about girls getting into fights. Alex Karev?"

"Alex is your big bro?"

Okay, so Kate was a little surprised. Not by Alex doing a poor job, but by him having ended up as a fake big sib in the first place.

"Oh you poor kid. So, has anyone actually been telling you anything about Fandom?"

Christian considered this carefully. "I found out I look like someone who's something called a Jedi," he answered. "And that you have very fast, very large horseless carriages."

"If you look like a Jedi, you might be hearing that quite a lot," Kate said, shaking her head a bit. "As for the, uh, horseless carriages-- Where exactly are you from? Or, when? I mean, what year is it for you now?"

She was sure she'd get an odd look for that question, but it was inevitable.

She got the odd look she expected, of course. "Today is May eighth, 1895," he answered. "... isn't it?"

Kate made a vaguely apologetic face. "Well, it is May eighth... But the year's actually 2010." Beat. "And I'm not crazy."

"Um." Christian didn't think she was crazy; his brain was simply refusing to process the information at all. "But -- that's absurd. People don't travel in time. How would it happen?"

"I don't know," Kate replied, shrugging. "I just know it does. This place is... pretty special."

Understatement.

"It must be, if I skipped ahead over a hundred years," Christian said. "And you look as though it's completely normal for you."

"I've been here since last July," she said. "And it is what passes for normal in Fandom. Also, in a few weeks, you'll think time travel is one of the least weird things here, trust me."

"Hmmph." Christian mulled that over, clearly not sure how to take this information. He was almost afraid to ask more questions. "I suppose it's all -- scope for a writer, isn't it?"

Christian was an optimist.

"If you want to think of it that way, yeah, I guess," Kate replied, giving him the friendly smile that new kids tended to get from her. "At least this is a pretty interesting place to live."

"Which is better than the prison camp Alex had me half convinced it was," Christian answered, and offered his hand. "My name's Christian, by the way. I forgot to introduce myself."

"Kate," she replied, shaking his hand. "You might not want to listen to much of what Alex says. And feel free to tell him I said that."
