Build Your Own Philosophy, Period 2, 3/29/10

The class would find a note on the usual classroom door asking them to meet outside on the basketball court. When they got there, they'd find Tyler in workout clothes and bouncing a basketball. He was cheerfully ignoring any lingering drizzle.

"I figured we all needed some time with fresh air with no monsters around," he said. "So today, this is gym class and we're playing basketball. This group" -- gesture to about half the students -- "is the red team, and the rest of you are blue."

"If you don't know how to play, you want to put the ball through the hoop. The people on the other team don't want to let you. You can't just carry the ball, you have to pass to a teammate or dribble, like this." He demonstrated, and explained a few other rules as he did.

"If you don't like team sports or you're still healing up, sit on the sidelines and find another way to keep busy for the rest of the hour. Or just breathe."

He was into the breathing part, yeah.

Raven didn't play well with others was not big with the team sports, so she sat off to the side to meditate instead, though she was disturbable if anyone wanted to talk to her.

"Whatcha doin'?" Hayley said, sitting down next to Raven. She didn't mean to interrupt, she was just curious. And figured she might get bowled over if she tried to play the game.
trigons_child: (Sideways half-smile)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

"I am merely meditating," Raven said, giving Hayley a smile. "This game is not as violent as some, but I know nothing of the rules and would look foolish if I even attempted to try."

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-29 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well gee," Hayley said. "If everyone was afraid to try things cause they might look silly, nothing'd ever get done." She giggled.

"But I understand. I think I might get hurt if I go out there. I ain't exactly the biggest girl in the room."
trigons_child: (Over the shoulder)

"Nor am I," Raven said. She was tall, but slender, though blessed with the improbably bosom that only a comic book character could have. "And to be jostled around so I would find distressing."

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
"No kidding," Hayley said. "But hey, we can always watch and cheer, right? Or... well, meditate I guess too. If you want."

She shrugged. "Never got that stuff, myself."
trigons_child: (Serious)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[personal profile] trigons_child 2010-03-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"It allows me to center myself," Raven explained. "So that I may strengthen the shielding that keeps the emotions of others from overwhelming me. And also to calm my own emotions."

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
"...other people's emotions can do that to you?" Hayley asked, tilting her head. "How does that even work?"
trigons_child: (Arms around self)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

"I do not merely sense the emotions of others, I feel them," Raven said. She didn't see any reason not to tell Hayley that. "And if they are too strong, they may overcome me."

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"So if people are like... really angry at you, you actually feel it?" Hayley said, thinking that sounded awful. "But... does this mean you've felt it whenever I've come by all sad?"
trigons_child: (Black)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[personal profile] trigons_child 2010-03-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"I feel it, yes," Raven said, nodding. "But I have learned to protect myself so I am not overwhelmed, as I said. Still, strong emotions can be difficult for me, but I am learning to shield myself better with Professor Skywalker's help."

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry if I ever caused you any feelings or anything," Hayley said, feeling a little guilty. "I didn't mean to, I didn't even know."
trigons_child: (Sitting & listening)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[personal profile] trigons_child 2010-03-30 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Please, Hayley, do not feel guilty," Raven said. "It is merely what I am, part of my gifts. You do not need to worry about that."

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] onlysmokesnics.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh man, if I feel guilty, you feel it too," Hayley said. She winced.

"Waaaaait, what happens if, like..."

She blushed a little and giggled.

Joan was not the athlete in her family so, yeah, sticking near the sidelines.

"Hey," she said. "How are you?"
trigons_child: (Checking you out)

"I am well, thank you," Raven said. She'd avoided the fog after the incident with Kennedy. "How are you?"

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[identity profile] joan-notjane.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Glad everything is back to normal," Joan said. "Well, as normal as anything gets around here."
trigons_child: (Curious)

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

[personal profile] trigons_child 2010-03-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Raven nodded. "The fog was very disconcerting. You were not caught out in it at all, were you?"

Re: Do Other Things [3/29]

Joan shook her head. "Anahata and I stayed inside as much as we could."
trigons_child: (Looking straight ahead)

"I wanted to help when people went out to fight yesterday," Raven said. "But it is probably better that I stayed away. The violence would be distressing." She would've tried to heal the wolves.

[identity profile] joan-notjane.livejournal.com 2010-03-30 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
There was no way Joan could imagine that ending well. "Definitely better that you stayed away," she agreed. "You would have been overwhelmed by all that violence."

Effy... wasn't really a basketball player at the best of times. After last week, she was even less so, if that was even possible.

Besides, she had a squalky droid baby to deal with since she'd abandoned it with Griff for most of last week. Just what every teenager wanted when she was trying to repress her rough mental state.

And of course she wasn't mentally plotting it's destruction.

Ino didn't mind the idea of playing basketball but she wasn't all that enthused about playing it alone either.

She sprawled out on the side and pulled out a notebook instead.

Concussion meant that unless someone healed her up first, Dinah wasn't bouncing around the court like usual.

She was sitting down and dribbling a ball though, because that was easy.
