Build Your Own Philosophy, Period 2, 3/29/10

The class would find a note on the usual classroom door asking them to meet outside on the basketball court. When they got there, they'd find Tyler in workout clothes and bouncing a basketball. He was cheerfully ignoring any lingering drizzle.

"I figured we all needed some time with fresh air with no monsters around," he said. "So today, this is gym class and we're playing basketball. This group" -- gesture to about half the students -- "is the red team, and the rest of you are blue."

"If you don't know how to play, you want to put the ball through the hoop. The people on the other team don't want to let you. You can't just carry the ball, you have to pass to a teammate or dribble, like this." He demonstrated, and explained a few other rules as he did.

"If you don't like team sports or you're still healing up, sit on the sidelines and find another way to keep busy for the rest of the hour. Or just breathe."

He was into the breathing part, yeah.

. . . Dude, no one was playing.

Priestly shrugged and grabbed a ball to shoot some hoops on his own. He wasn't as good at basketball as he was at football, but he was definitely better at this than he was at beating up monkeyponies.

Raven didn't play well with others was not big with the team sports, so she sat off to the side to meditate instead, though she was disturbable if anyone wanted to talk to her.

"Whatcha doin'?" Hayley said, sitting down next to Raven. She didn't mean to interrupt, she was just curious. And figured she might get bowled over if she tried to play the game.

"I am merely meditating," Raven said, giving Hayley a smile. "This game is not as violent as some, but I know nothing of the rules and would look foolish if I even attempted to try."

"Well gee," Hayley said. "If everyone was afraid to try things cause they might look silly, nothing'd ever get done." She giggled.

"But I understand. I think I might get hurt if I go out there. I ain't exactly the biggest girl in the room."

"Hey," she said. "How are you?"

Effy... wasn't really a basketball player at the best of times. After last week, she was even less so, if that was even possible.

Besides, she had a squalky droid baby to deal with since she'd abandoned it with Griff for most of last week. Just what every teenager wanted when she was trying to repress her rough mental state.

And of course she wasn't mentally plotting it's destruction.

Ino didn't mind the idea of playing basketball but she wasn't all that enthused about playing it alone either.

She sprawled out on the side and pulled out a notebook instead.

Concussion meant that unless someone healed her up first, Dinah wasn't bouncing around the court like usual.

She was sitting down and dribbling a ball though, because that was easy.

Joan was around but please don't ask her to play basketball. After all, this is the girl who nearly broke her leg doing laundry.
