Horror 101, Monday

[chosehumanity]

"I think you've all had your fair share of horror last week," Mitchell announced, "But I'm fairly sure half your teachers are going to give you movie classes now, so I thought I'd try and get creative."

Fear, class. Fear.

"That's why we've gathered in the Danger Shop today," he continued. "I thought it would be nice for some hands-on practice. See, we've got all of these fears we're working on and working with, but many of them, as I've said, come down to what we fear in ourselves."

A pause.

"These things tend to start in childhood," he said, "And work their way up. So today, we are going to be regressing."

He opened the door behind him and revealed--

"Today, you're going to Eurodisney!" A pause. "I'll be expecting at least two of you to get into a fight," he said, solemnly. "If you do, use something padded."

A beat, in case they thought he'd completely lost it-- "If you need me this week, I'll be spending most of it in Bristol. So use the phone."

And that would appear to be it.

"I suppose movie week wouldn't be much of a break for this class," Jack offered, deliberately keeping his back to the creepy people in giant costumes as he talked to Mitchell. "Hi."

"I thought I'd keep things unpredictable," Mitchell agreed, popping another kernel into his mouth. "Made it through the fog unscathed?"

"I went mad, picked a fight with Dinah Lance and then decided to stay inside until things were better," Jack explained, waving it off. "What about you? Radio said you were about ...?"

"Keeping an eye on everything. Trying to catch a few of you suicidal lot by the scruff of your necks," he said, shrugging. "The fog couldn't exactly bother me."

Ah, being dead, how you could come in handy in the strangest ways.

"I'm stunned," Jack said dryly. (Though how you could smoke without breathing was, he supposed, a question for the ages.) "I'm grateful none of the suicidal ones actually succeeded as far as I can tell."

Roughly up the same alley as smoking without doing up lung cancer, really. Nothing gets processed into nutrients, or something like that - okay, Mitchell wasn't a biology professor.

"Heard some of them landed in the clinic," Mitchell noted. "Close enough."

"Not really," Jack dissented. "Not that it's fun, but clinic means not dead. Not dead is a miracle, times a few dozen."

... he was a cheerful one today.

"If you're going to get all glass half-full about it," said Mitchell, but he didn't sound like he particularly minded.

Kate had cotton candy instead of popcorn, this time.

Cotton candy, and an amused expression. "You are such a dork."

"I'm not sure whether to feel insulted or not," Mitchell muttered, flicking a kernel of popcorn her way.

"I could also call you childish, if that'd help?" Kate offered with a snicker. And a slight dodge.

"This is a lesson in regression," Mitchell pointed out, sagely. "You're supposed to be the childish one, or you're doing it wrong."

"I like to run counter to expectations," Kate shrugged, then added mock-haughtily, "And I'm an old soul. Can't do regression."

Someone was happy to have the hallucinatory fog and monster business over and done with, yes.

Or she'd already had too much candy. One of those.

Mitchell snorted. "Trust me," he said, "The older you get, the easier regression becomes."

She should meet Ivan some day. Get that thought right out of her head.

"I wonder if that's why T seems to be getting more and more immature as time goes by..."

No, that was happening because Kate would be older than T soon enough.

She picked at her cotton candy and shrugged. "Anyway. Can't say I'm complaining about the whole Eurodisney thing."

"Well, if you cultural barbarians won't go to Europe, I'll bring Europe to you," he joked, taking another bite of popcorn.

"If one more of those people try to hug me I am kicking them where it will hurt the worst," Chloe warned as she sat next to her teacher.

"How are you?"

"Just make sure you get something padded to hit them with," Mitchell said, amused.

Really, he'd be interested to see Chloe kick someone in... the shin. Yes.

"Probably the least traumatized of anyone in this room," he said, lightly. "How about yourself, Chloe?"

She smiled at him. "I didn't go out in the fog, which was probably a good thing because who knows what I would have seen." Oh yeah, that could have been so bad. "Yesterday was hard because I heard all of the fighting and yelling... and I couldn't do anything to help."

She bounced a little. "But I met Ino and she's going to help me with that."

Mitchell raised his eyebrows. "Really?" he prompted, "Excellent. How's she going to do that?"

She nodded. "We're going to start out with first aid, I think. She said I didn't need to fight to be helpful."

"She makes a very good point," Mitchell said, approvingly. "There's loads of things you can do. With and without your particular talents. This might be a chance to let the world in."

"That could take a little bit of time," she admitted. "But she seems really nice."

Mitchell could do bottomless enthusiasm like the best of them.

"You've got years left in this place. You'll be doing good with the rest of them in no time."
