Ethics [Tuesday, March 23, 2nd period]

Today Anakin's desk was covered with droid babies in bassinets. Each baby had a tiny stuffed Ewok tucked next to it. Hush.

"Today we talk about lust," Anakin said, pulling his attention back from the wall he'd been staring at, trying to get a handle on a bad feeling he'd been having since stepping foot on the island yesterday. "Or rather, the unintended consequences that can happen when you take action without precautions."

He smiled. Evilly. Some of his lesson plans might have changed this semester, but he had been looking forward to the droid babies with something close to unholy glee this go-around. "Meet your little projects for the next week. They're heavy, they cry, and they will record everything you do with them. So if you stuff them into a closet for the duration, believe me, I'll know."

After all, he'd built all of them.

He reached for a list of paper. "I've paired you up together." His smile turned a little more evil. "And some of your babies are a little fussier than others."

"You have a fake child for the week which you should deal with like a genuine responsibility," Anakin said. "I don't foist Juliet off onto Rory because she's inconvenient for me."

"It's a droid, not a real child," Leia protested. "I'm hardly going to go out with Chuck Bass and give birth to a droid then next day." She picked Chuck's name because she figured it would annoy Anakin. "I wouldn't treat a real child that way. Besides, Dan was all for playing at being a father."

Anakin didn't look impressed. He'd heard stories from Jaina about parts of her childhood and was looking to nip those tendencies of Leia's in the bud.

"That's because you manipulated him into it," he said flatly.

"I merely explained the situation, and he agreed," Leia said. Which was true...from a certain point of view. See, not only did she remember her real mother from mere seconds after her own birth, she'd absorbed that gem of wisdom from Obi-Wan as well.

"And if you want me to learn about taking care of a child," she continued, "I'd rather watch Juliet than drag a droid around with me for a week. I have better things to do."

Anakin snorted. "Deal with the fake baby first, then you get the real one."

"This isn't about teaching us the consequences of lust," Leia snapped. Two steps forward at Flight Club last week, one step back now, but she was cranky. She hadn't missed those evil little smiles when he talked about the assignment. "This is about satisfying your egotistical need to make your students miserable," she accused.

"Why can't it satisfy both?" Anakin replied. "Would you rather listen to me lecture about how lust can lead to weird alien sexually transmitted diseases? In detail? With graphics?"

"It would be more honest at least," Leia said. "And less creepy." For certain definitions of creepy.

Maybe just because Leia hadn't seen the graphics.

"You only have to deal with the babies for a week," Anakin said. "You can't give real ones back."

Or have Obi-Wan steal them away because you've turned slightly evil.

"I concede I am too young to have a child," Leia put forth. "See? I know that. I don't need a droid to teach me that. Especially one that's going to record my every move when I'm with it." Hence, creepy.

"But lust can override logic," Anakin countered.

Hence his first marriage, but not something he was going to tell his daughter.

"And it's only recording to make sure you aren't abusing it," Anakin said. "I have no interest in checking up on it unless the baby comes back bruised or wailing."

Or eaten. Hypothetically.

It wasn't just lust -- Anakin had loved her mother! Because...she wasn't sand. Or something like that.

"Then if my assigned partner takes adequate care of the droids, we've passed the assignment," she said, seizing on that. "The details don't matter since you only care about the final result."

And because he'd ignored her when she'd broken up with him while wearing a black corset thing. Emotional health totally ran in the family from...somewhere that wasn't Anakin's genes.

"I care about the results," Anakin agreed, "but I was hoping for a little more effort from you, too."

"Why?" Leia asked. "Jaina's turned out well, so I obviously do something right when the time comes."

Oh, how little she knew.

A little flash of amusement danced in Anakin's eyes, but he didn't correct her.

"That's a different timeline," he said. "You still need to learn the lessons that Jaina's mother has had."

"Did her mother meet her own not-so-dead-after-all father in a high school in another galaxy and get a pair of droid babies handed off to her?" Leia argued stubbornly. "Somehow I don't think so."

"If I say yes, will your head explode?" Anakin teased.

Leia considered that. "No, not really," she decided. "Because that might mean I'm really her mother and not some alternate version of her, and I think I like that idea."

Anakin was highly trained at remaining neutral, so none of his thoughts showed on his face (for once. He was highly trained but not exactly disciplined in this particular art).

"And then her head would explode at having the same mom in two different timelines. Who dated Chuck Bass."

"Different timelines are confusing enough as it is," Leia said, making a face. She didn't like to think about them too hard or it made her head hurt.

"Do Jaina or Ben have another you back in their own world? And where are you right now in mine?" She was more than happy to get off the topic of babies and pester her father with questions he probably wouldn't answer.

"I'm dead," Anakin replied with a philosophical shrug of his shoulders.

Nice dodge, Anakin.

"I'd already figured that part out," Leia said dryly. "But wouldn't you want to know about your children?"

"I would," Anakin said, "but other versions of me might not have known you existed."

"So I should just ignore the father in my own world and accept the one in this one?" Leia said. Only in Fandom would that sentence make any sense.

"Yes," Anakin said, sounding surprisingly sincere.

He felt that this could lead to a lot less heartache in the long run.
