Ethics [Tuesday, March 16]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it. Given that his daughter was in the room, the likelihood of that not happening were ones not even a Corellian would bet on.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred, or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming under the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think the Masters of my Order were trying to prevent?"

"They were trying to prevent people with swords that can cut through anything and the powers of a god from making irrational decisions with all of the weapons at their disposable. It makes some sense," Bruce said. "And I don't think it's unreasonable. A person can leave the Jedi if they're not up to the standards, right? If they can't manage to follow the rules, they don't have to be in the club."
