Ethics [Tuesday, March 16]

"Love is patient, love is kind," Anakin began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it. Given that his daughter was in the room, the likelihood of that not happening were ones not even a Corellian would bet on.

"In my version of the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain the proper distance necessary to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred, or love. When we were very small children, we were raised in the Temple so that family loyalty or planetary allegiance would not get in the way of following the will of the Force."

He crossed his arms over his chest, the ring on his left hand gleaming under the light, and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? Can you stop someone from falling in love? What do you think the Masters of my Order were trying to prevent?"

Leia was totally rolling her eyes at the lecture. Her father had been married twice and had three children. She soooo wasn't buying the "blah blah blah" attitude.

"Love and compassion go hand in hand," Leia pointed out. "If you don't know love, how can you be expected to feel compassion for those who are suffering?" She wasn't going to touch anger or hatred today; she was still too shaken by her Sith Lady self falling into that trap. "As for stopping someone from falling in love, it's probably easier to stop a Hutt from eating."

"I'd say these things are hard to contain in their entirety."

... Sure. Ask the severely repressed, emotionally retarded British prince about feelings.

"But restraint will keep you from showing unnecessary weakness. You can hardly serve on as a warrior if you can't keep yourself from lashing out or crying or something."

All right, so Uther Pendragon might have been able to find some common ground with these Jedi masters.

Bod decided the Jedi way sounded very isolated and lonely. His upbringing might not have been the most normal but he'd known love and thought he was better for it.

"If people have the ability to love or feel, then there's always going to be a chance that it happens," said Bod thoughtfully. "If the capacity is there, then the chance is there. Asking someone not to use their emotions would be akin to asking them to ignore a part of themselves. It'd be both difficult to do and leave them with an isolated existence. It seems the Masters of the Order were trying to prevent any distraction but humans are susceptible to distractions even with the best of training."

Dru was only half listening to the lecture, mostly she was still stuck in her head, the events of the previous week stuck on repeat.

"I think it's asking someone to ignore a whole range of experiences that could possibly make them a better person," Dru replied. "On the other hand though, if you wind up loving someone and the overall situation goes south, that person, or the family you've made becomes a target. And then you might do something stupid to protect them."

Like leading the vampire away from your daughter so he can kill you instead.

"I think it's totally unreasonable," Claire said. "Emotions aren't logical. You can control how you act on them, but you can't control actually having them."
