Library [09/10]

Sam's morning ritual had somehow managed to take less time today than usual, so he got to the library earlier than usual as well. Deciding to put the time to good use, Sam checked for dust and messes in all the places that he had to stretch to reach, figuring that none of the other aides could get to those spots at all. He wasn't sure where the flowers in the library kept coming from, but he took the time to water those too before unlocking the doors and opening the place up.

Chuck got actual food for lunch this week instead of vending machine snacks. More specifically, burger and fries from the Diner for Sam and sushi for himself. Chuck didn't really eat that diner stuff unless he was high.

"You'll be pleased to know I didn't make any of this myself," Chuck said when he came in. "So it probably won't kill you if you eat it."

"It doesn't smell like it'll kill me," Sam said, grinning. "You sound like I feel about cooking."

"If you feel like you're going to burn something down every time you get near a stove then, yeah, we both feel the same way," he said as he sat down. "It's not like I've had to cook for myself before coming here, you know."

"Of course not. The filthy rich have people who cook for them," Sam said, with just a twinge of jealousy. "Or bring food to them."

"I do miss getting breakfast in bed every morning," Chuck said with a slight pout. "Room service is one of the best parts about living in a hotel."

"You actually live in a hotel?" Sam asked. "Do you get room service whenever you want?"

"My father owns the hotel so I get whatever I want whenever I want," Chuck said offhandedly as he poured out soy sauce for his sushi. "I don't know if you've ever been to New York but we own the Palace Hotel. It's the one on Madison Avenue, right across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral."

Ah, he loved to brag.

Sam's eyes got a little wide as he remembered his trip to the Cathedral. "Dude, seriously? No wonder you've been trained to eat stuff like that," he said, pointing to Chuck's sushi.

"What's wrong with sushi?" he asked.

"It's raw," Sam said. "And a prime ingredient is seaweed. I mean, I like salads, but isn't that a little weird?"

"Millions of Japanese people eat it every day. It's not weird at all," Chuck said, picking up a piece with his chopsticks and eyeing it. "And this stuff is actually pretty good considering it's from Fandom. New York and Tokyo do it better, obviously."

Chuck really liked the sushi bars in New York where you ate sushi off the naked ladies.

...yeah, it was probably a good thing Sam didn't really know about those kinds of bars.

"Isn't it even more dangerous to eat overseas?" he asked. "At least here, they have to check the food."

"Now you're just being paranoid," Chuck said, shaking his head. "It's perfectly safe."

Save for the blow fish.

"Have you ever even tried it?"

Sam made a face and shook his head. "I'm perfectly content with burgers and fries," he said.

Chuck rolled his eyes. "You are such a wuss."

"I am not," Sam protested. "Thank you, by the way. For the food and all."

"Can't let you sit around eating lunch by yourself," Chuck said, shrugging. "I get the feeling you're not used to it."

"I'm really not. Dean had lunch with me pretty much every week," Sam admitted. "It's okay though. I mean, I guess I should get used to doing stuff by myself? If I'm going to survive college next year."

"College. Almost forgot about that. You can practice for college the other days of the week," he said. "I'm sure you won't be alone for long there, anyway. You seem to make friends fast."

Because Sam was nice. People seemed to like that, Chuck noticed.

Sam couldn't help but beam a little, like he'd been praised. "I like having friends," he said. "I have to wonder what college will be like after four years here though. I'm going to have to get used to hiding everything again, and trying to act totally normal."

"It's surprisingly easy to adjust," Chuck said. "I mean, with the exception of Blair and Serena, I haven't told anybody at home anything about this place. When I go home I have to sit there and pretend I don't employ the undead at the bar."

"Yeah, but you have a normal life to begin with," Sam said. "Um, compared to your friends, at least. I mean, I guess your lifestyle isn't exactly average, but at least it's believable."

"Yeah, but I know now that things aren't normal," Chuck said. "I mean, the doorman used to try to scare me and Nate by saying the mansion part of the hotel was haunted. Now I know he could have been telling the truth. That's totally weird."

Okay, the doorman was probably just trying to scare them. But that wasn't the point.

"I guess that's what the alumni network is for, so you'll always have people to talk to about the weird stuff, if you really need to," Sam said.

"Maybe you'll do that," Chuck said. "I get the feeling I probably won't keep in touch after."

It's not like he was knee deep in friends, here. Of course the same thing could be said for when he was in New York too.
