BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

Jaime looked like your average friendly teenager. He also looked slightly distracted. But that was normal, too, right? As long as no one heard his occasional mutterings of "No, that's ridiculous. You're being paranoid!" he probably seemed perfectly harmless.

Eric noticed the guy and wondered why he was talking to himself.

But that didn't stop him from waving.

Jaime's attention suddenly seemed to focus on Eric and his mouth snapped shut. "Hey," he called with a friendly grin as he waved back.

"Hi," Eric said. "Eric Matthews. Heading to Fandom High."

"Jaime Reyes," Jaime answered, sticking his hand out. "Same, apparently."

Eric shook his hand. "Hi-me? That's an unusual name."

Jaime snorted in easy amusement. "Not where I'm from," he countered. "Where do you live that you don't have any Jaimes?"

"Philadelphia," Eric said. "Where are you from?"

"That's your problem. Too New England."

"I'm from El Paso," Jaime grinned.

"Is that in Spain?" Eric asked.

Geography was not his strong suit.

Jaime stared for a minute, then burst out laughing.

"Texas," he managed when he stopped to breathe. "It's in Texas."

"Oh, okay," Eric said. "That's cool."

Jaime couldn't help himself. "Not really. It's the desert, after all."

"Why are you paranoid?" Didi asked -- but in a friendly, curious way, as if she were asking for the time.

"Wha-what?" Jaime stammered. "I'm not..." he trailed off and stared at her.

"Talking to yourself? You kind of are," she informed him. "It's okay. Everybody does it."

She offered her hand. "I'm Didi."

"Um..." Jaime swallowed and took her hand hesitantly. "I'm Jaime." He seemed distracted. Like he was having an argument in his head.

"Nice to meet you, Jaime," Didi said, cocking her head at him. "Should I leave you alone to finish your conversation?"

He shook his head violently as if trying to clear it. "What? What conversation?"

Jaime Reyes: suuuuuper convincing.

"The very important one you were having with yourself," Didi reminded him. "I mean, I can go for a walk. I think my fish might like to see the magazine stand."

... yes. The living embodiment of Death was carrying two goldfish in a travel tank.

"Um, no!" Jaime objected quickly. "I was just..." Um... moving on!

"It's nice to meet you, Didi."

"Likewise," Didi said properly, amusement still flickering in her dark eyes. "Are you going to school, Jaime?"

"That's the plan," he grinned. "I take it you are too?"

"Junior year," Didi said, almost proudly. "It'll be fun! I have no idea what to expect, do you?"

"I'm a junior too!" Jaime exclaimed, clearly finding the similarities between them... something good.

"And I've never been to a fancy boarding school, so I don't really know either." Also, a whooooole lot of the students seemed to be making the Scarab spaz out. Which promised to make things... interesting.
