Mythbusting, Tuesday, 8/4

Class met in the Danger Shop today, and Tyler was notably subdued. He didn't feel right but was trying to hold it together enough to teach.

"Car myths," he said, once the class was gathered near a parking lot of simulated vehicles. "Sugar or bleach in the gas tank will kill the engine, a potato in the tail pipe will blow up the car, mothballs in the fuel tank make a car run better, a penny in the carburetor ruins the engine, an egg will fix a crack in the radiator. You've probably heard stuff like that -- the ones of you from worlds with cars, anyhow."

"Today, we're checking them out. 'Additives' " -- finger quotes on that word -- "are over on the table, and every pair of you gets a fake car to screw around with. If you're going to try to blow it up, handwavily let me know so I can get up the shields. If you don't know how to drive, pair up with someone who does. I'm passing out a diagram of a car's engine that should get you started."

"Questions?"

It was probably bad that, as Turtle sat and listened to all of this, she was plotting to discover which one might blow up her car, the junker her dad got her for her sixteenth birthday, just to have an excuse to get a new one, wasn't it?

Anemone had ridden in a car maybe three or four times in her entire life; anywhere she wanted to go at home, she usually took Dominic's motorbike or flew.

Still, this sort of thing could be useful, so she set about taking notes diligently.

Katchoo looked a little uncomfortable; she'd never actually done it, but she knew about five different ways to blow up cars. And really, really didn't want to have to let on that she did.

Sam was pretty sure that Dean would have been terribly offended by the idea of blowing up a car. He, on the other hand, was just a little wary of being too destructive.

Alex was excited about testing things out on the cars. Plus, she knew how to handle a car, she just didn't have her license yet. Not until next year, anyway.

"Am I going to have to play with all the additives today?" Sam asked, since he was getting used to that. The urge to hug Chuck again was there, but Sam resisted since they were in public.

As the TA for Driver's Ed, Francine was a little conflicted on doing stuff she was fairly sure was not in the manual.

Then again Mister Durden wouldn't let them do anything that might go terribly, terribly wrong! Of course not!

Robin had taken driver's ed here before so he knew how to drive. It was simply a matter of finding a car the right size.

Turtle had put off going to see Tyler until well after she'd had some car fun, and she reminded herself that, no, she was not going to feel bad about hoping that everyone being still all stressed out over the sleeping vampire thing last weekend worked to her advantage when she came up to him with a pitiable expression.

"Make-up work?" she asked, frowning as if his suggestion of make-up work when Maron brought her turtle roommate to him last week was a cruel thing to do to a girl for something she couldn't control. They were students together at one point, after all; he should understand!

The TA was there, slightly sulky that Ino wasn't around to help her blow one of the cars up.

She'd started bringing glitter to each class, darn it, and an exploding car would have given them a fantastic fireball of shiny.
