Mythbusting, Tuesday, 8/4

Class met in the Danger Shop today, and Tyler was notably subdued. He didn't feel right but was trying to hold it together enough to teach.

"Car myths," he said, once the class was gathered near a parking lot of simulated vehicles. "Sugar or bleach in the gas tank will kill the engine, a potato in the tail pipe will blow up the car, mothballs in the fuel tank make a car run better, a penny in the carburetor ruins the engine, an egg will fix a crack in the radiator. You've probably heard stuff like that -- the ones of you from worlds with cars, anyhow."

"Today, we're checking them out. 'Additives' " -- finger quotes on that word -- "are over on the table, and every pair of you gets a fake car to screw around with. If you're going to try to blow it up, ~~handwavily~~ let me know so I can get up the shields. If you don't know how to drive, pair up with someone who does. I'm passing out a diagram of a car's engine that should get you started."

"Questions?"

"Make-up work," Tyler echoed, as if he were strained to try to remember what those words meant in those order, let alone why Turtle would be saying them to him.

It did snap into place.

"Right. You were reptilian."

Turtle nodded in agreement with this fact. "A circumstance," she stated, "which I imagine you are well aware is beyond my control. Had I have been skipping class capriciously, I could understand why make-up work might be advisable, but in the turn of certain uncontrollable events, I would like to make the claim that it would be inscrutable and excessive."

It possibly was not the most professional thing Tyler had ever said, but that really was a large number of words to say it's not fair.

Hey, she was a lawyer, okay? And believed firmly in the idea that if you put enough effort into your whining, it'll yield better results.

But, for now, she just gave a slight snort. "I wish. But, no, I did not. I purely felt that, if I'm going to make a case for my excuse, I wasn't going to waste your time with simple complaining and, instead, offer a verifiable point of interest for your consideration."

She nodded. She would have added a sir if it was any other teacher, but it was still too weird thinking to call Tyler a sir.

"Consider your case made," Tyler decided. It was summer, she was a senior, she'd drawn him out of his funk, and it wasn't as if the previous week's class was easily boiled down to homework. "You're excused, since small-t turtles can't exactly do classwork."

Unlike Muppet frogs; it was hard not to glance at Robin after that particular statement.

Just as it was hard to not follow that glance and then firmly bite her lower lip against a smirk. Turtle cleared her throat to regain her professionalism, which meant giving Tyler another nod. "Thank you," she said. "I appreciate your understanding of the situation, Tyler, and can at least offer a promise that I will make up for it instead by pursuing all the other endeavors of this workshop with great enthusiasm."

Because it was blowing stuff up. For science. She was going to pursue it with great enthusiasm no matter what, so it was a pretty good deal on her side of things.

"I appreciate your enthusiastic approach to this class," Tyler said formally, with a slight bow of his head. "I trust you'll use the information responsibly."

... he so didn't. Yes, this was Turtle, but it was still class about blowing things up.
