Library (And Support Services): Friday, 7/31

Francine had trekked out to the park early to put up signs at the usual meeting place that matched the ones on the library doors:

If you heard Mayor Summers' announcement, you know there's something going on. If you didn't hear Mayor Summers' announcement, there's something going on. Please come in and help research anything you can find about vampires, alternate universes, narcolepsy, sleep visions, or anything else that seems like it might help!

There was also a worried Francine with a brand new hairstyle (for those who haven't been dreaming of other places, anyway) hovering back and forth between the books and the food.

Francine could be found trying to take notes, mostly from books at the Time-Life Book of... level, when she wasn't heading back to the food to munch nervously on cookies and chips. She had an eating thing. Just in case no one noticed.

Annja approached Francine and smiled slightly. "I'm here to help, put me to work?" She had poured through everything in Coyote Medicine and had found nothing helpful.

Francine gave her back a smile a little less slight, because yay for forced cheer. "There's vampires, alternate dimensions, psychic dreams--" That one made the smile flicker, though. She pointed to various tables where the books were stacked. "What's your poison?"

She thought for a moment. "Alternate dimensions. I read all about psychic dreams yesterday at work." She sighed. "You would think a store that specializes in Native American stuff would have answers of some kind, but we don't."

"I came as quickly as I could," Morgana said in greeting as she beelined over to Francine. "I heard the announcement and--what happened to your hair?" Because that was definitely the most important question at the moment.

Francine bit her lip. "I don't know. It was just.. I saw something yesterday night, and then it was just like this."

"It's pretty, but..." Morgana trailed off as she reached over to try to brush at the streak. "Are you all right?"

Francine let her, just glancing down a bit. "I'm fine. I guess. I don't feel sick or anything."

"You don't look entirely well either, if I may say so," Morgana replied. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

"I feel fine," Francine repeated, though yes, it was an Arthur sort of fine. "But I'm going to get yelled at if I don't at least talk to one of the doctors about it. Could you watch things here if I head over to town a little later?"

"It turns out we have someone who seems to be from the same world as the vampires," Jack announced, without preamble. He nodded to Tara. "She says the best things to contain them are fairly ordinary, sunlight and holy water. Is that of any use?"

Francine looked over at Tara and shuddered, not at but for her, to come from the same place as those things. "If they come here it sure would be." Francine grabbed a notebook and wrote it down, because yeah, movie vampire stuff, but knowing it would work on those things and wasn't just movie stuff was a big difference. "Staking them in the heart works too," she added, not looking up.

Well, yes, but Jack had been hoping he could slide past that. He had his loyalties, after all.

"I heard," he had to acknowledge. "I hope it won't come to that kind of combat, but she did say that."

His eyes were bright when he looked at Francine, and he noticed she'd changed her hair. "How did you know?"

She didn't ~~ever~~ really want to explain; finally she just said, "I know someone who did it once."

"It must be horrible."

Jack didn't want to think about it past that.

"Hey Francine," Layla said cheerfully. "Just so you know there's a device hidden in the catacombs under Fandom that controls the. Actions that either Helen or Alex will tell you about. There's a map somewhere in the library that tells where it is and a schematic on how it works is on the device."

This is Francine's I owe Arthur a hundred dollars face. "Um. What?"

Even if she was also reaching for her notepad because at this point she was writing down anything someone told her. Smarter people could sort out what was actually right or useful.

"A device in the catacombs," Layla repeated as she leaned on the table. "It controls the island ~~which was the one word my phone cut off kshflkasjfhlsakdj~~. It'll make more sense when Helen or Alex talks to you. Also to find the device, there's a map of the catacombs in the library showing the location."

Controls the island. That...actually made sense by itself, given last summer's world tour. Though Francine was still going with what? Because it was very comfortable.

"How do you know --" It wasn't even worth asking where she found the information about the device or the catacombs. Or how it was supposed to be useful for this problem. But-- "How do you know what Helen and Alex are going to find?"

"Because I'm Layla Miller," she replied with a shrug and a grin.

Helen returned one book on vampires and went back for another. "Too bad their island isn't like ours last summer," she said to Francine.

Francine ~~who hadn't talked to Layla yet~~, looked up from her book on dream-walking. Only about every fifth word of which she understood. "What do you mean?"

"It moved all over the place last summer," Helen explained. "One week we were off the coast of Greece, beautiful and sunny and warm, another time we moved somewhere freezing cold."

She shrugged. "Vampires don't like lots of sun, so if their island moved somewhere really sunny the way ours did." And sighed. "Yeah, like that would happen when it was actually useful."

"Yeah, I was there for that too." Francine nodded. "I just didn't think about some places we went not being good for vampires." She laughed. "Since there aren't any on our island." She...could still be naive about some things, yes.

"Too bad we couldn't find someplace that had sun 24/7," Helen said with a sigh. "If, you know, we could talk the island into moving there. Or somewhere where it rained holy watr or something."
