Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

Accepting what he'd said without another word, she held up the rock. Held up the string.

Pressed the string to the rock. Held up the two halves of the rock.

"See?"

His eyes widened as he reached for one of the halves of rock. Would've been nice to see magic like the people of old and see just how that happened. Still, he could ask.

"Is it magic then?" George asked, spinning the rock in his fingers but watching Fiona intently.

She shook her head.

"It's what I can do. If I have an edge and the will to cut, I can cut it."

She put the other half of the rock onto the ground before winding up the rest of the string. Where she cut was as smooth as glass.

"Which is why I can use that. Not magic, though."

"Impressive," George commented, still watching the rocks and the string. "An' ye can do it wi' anythiing?"

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Anything. Could do the same thing with my hair. A blade of grass. Someone's necklace."

She shrugged.

"Lots of people here can do things. Some people tell, some people don't. So you know."

George nodded, glancing back at the rock. Secrets didn't bother him. He figured them all out eventually.

"So I've heard," he said easily. "Have ye always been able t'do that then?"

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe," she admitted with a shrug.

"But I only found out I could after my last birthday. My family is a little weird."

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
George snorted. He'd heard that description a few too many times today. "A little weird, aye? Like this place-" the sweep of his hand took in the crowd and the castle amd the lawns "- is just a tiny bit weird?"

"Exactly like that," and her wry smile spoke to more than a few difficulties because of it.

"Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Don' mind in th' slightest," George said. "I'm told it's another world. 'M from th' Lower City in Tortall."

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
"A different world," she agreed, "as I've never heard of that city, and I know almost all of Earth's geography."

Other than this island and a few hidden locations that weren't her fault.

"I'm from this world. But I just came back from a day or so in another world. What's yours like?"

"Dunno," he admitted after a moment's thought about lying. But then spinnin' a tale would mean he was ashamed of George Cooper and ashamed of his mam, and that surely wouldna stand.
"I've only been out of th'city once t'go downriver to Port Caynn. Th'city though - a lad could stay there his whole life an' never get bored. So many people comin' an' goin', bringin' their goods in t'trade and leavin' their valuables. Th'Court of th'Rogue watchin' over it all, an' the mots sellin' their flowers or pies. Th' Dogs marching on their rounds, catchin' a gixie lass at her pickpocketin'. It's a fine city."

She smiled at the description. She couldn't tell what he was talking about at some points, but he seemed to love it. It was like listening to Leto talk about Arrakis.

"Sounds very nice," she murmured when he'd finished, and she wasn't kidding or placating him.

"T'would be home," George said, smiling at her. "An' very different from what it looks like here." Because Fandom wasn't, you know, a mass of slums. "Yer from this world? Tell me about it now?"

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"My description won't be nearly as interesting," she warned, "but would you like to hear about this place, or where I'm from? Del Sombre wasn't exactly an interesting place."

He settled back on his elbows in the grass to listen. "P'haps not interestin' to you," George replied. "But 'm certain t'will be over here." He raised an eyebrow, catching what sounded like past tense. "T'was goin' t'say your home, but I shouldn't like t'bring up any bad times?"

"It was destroyed just a couple months ago," she admitted quietly, "but I lived there without much happening for fifteen years. It was a small place; we mostly lived off of the tourists who came between the city and the Napa Valley. My mother ran the apartment building and we worked at the restaurant in town. We didn't go to school so most of my memories involve books upon books upon books."

"'M sorry it was destroyed," he said, frowning. "Tis an awful thing to lose a home."

"We?" George repeated curiously. "D'you have brothers and sisters?"

"It was a place to be," she told him with a little smile, "and yeah, we. I have a twin brother named Eliot. He got sent to school somewhere else."

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-07-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"...I don' look like 'im, do I?" George asked warily.

It was totally a valid question.

She laughed and shook her head before reaching for her phone in her bag. There, she showed off a picture of a young man (http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/85859683/18777440) in a uniform.

"That's Eliot. You don't look like him at all, really."

[identity profile] noearsyet.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Good," he said, surprised at the phone and the picture, and his fingers itched to play with it. But Fiona was a nice lass, and he wasn't going to start filching anything now.

"Never thought I'd need ask that before today," he admitted, giving her an amused smile.

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-07-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
She noticed the interest and held the phone out to him.

"You can look at it for a few minutes if you like."

All there was on there was Eliot's picture, some of Eliot's music, a couple of songs from Dinah, and the text messages from her brother that mostly consisted of bizarre and extensive insults to one another that most people wouldn't understand because they referenced things that the majority of the population had better things to do than look up.

"Did someone say you looked like their twin, then?"

"I thank you, lass," George said, checking again before taking it from her to poke at. He was completely unfamiliar with the technology or really anything on it, but his fingers were deft and his brain quick so managed to start flipping through it more quickly than one might expect.

That consumed him enough that it took a while for the question to sink. "Oh, aye, pretty lass - Jaina."

"I've met her. She's nice though we tend to run out of things to talk about," she admitted with a brief blush.

And she didn't have to mention the girl who looked like her but was a total bitch since ha! Brooke was gone.

...yes, Fiona was entirely unreasonable about her. That probably wasn't going to change.
