Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

"'M sorry it was destroyed," he said, frowning. "Tis an awful thing to lose a home."

"We?" George repeated curiously. "D'you have brothers and sisters?"

"It was a place to be," she told him with a little smile, "and yeah, we. I have a twin brother named Eliot. He got sent to school somewhere else."

She laughed and shook her head before reaching for her phone in her bag. There, she showed off a picture of a young man (http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/85859683/18777440) in a uniform.

"That's Eliot. You don't look like him at all, really."

"Good," he said, surprised at the phone and the picture, and his fingers itched to play with it. But Fiona was a nice lass, and he wasn't going to start filching anything now.

"Never thought I'd need ask that before today," he admitted, giving her an amused smile.

She noticed the interest and held the phone out to him.

"You can look at it for a few minutes if you like."

All there was on there was Eliot's picture, some of Eliot's music, a couple of songs from Dinah, and the text messages from her brother that mostly consisted of bizarre and extensive insults to one another that most people wouldn't understand because they referenced things that the majority of the population had better things to do than look up.

"Did someone say you looked like their twin, then?"

"I thank you, lass," George said, checking again before taking it from her to poke at. He was completely unfamiliar with the technology or really anything on it, but his fingers were deft and his brain quick so managed to start flipping through it more quickly than one might expect.

That consumed him enough that it took a while for the question to sink. "Oh, aye, pretty lass - Jaina."

"I've met her. She's nice though we tend to run out of things to talk about," she admitted with a brief blush.

And she didn't have to mention the girl who looked like her but was a total bitch since ha! Brooke was gone.

...yes, Fiona was entirely unreasonable about her. That probably wasn't going to change.

"Happens to everyone," he pointed out, and the blush was entirely cute enough that it distracted him from the phone for a moment. "I'd think especially when people have all this different worlds...stuff."

George laughed. "'M not worried about that, lass. 'Tis a kind thought that's appreciated, but 'm sure of that."

"Oh?" she asked, one eyebrow raised. She was smiling a little.

George had grown up in the Cesspool, the worst part of the slums in the Lower City. He was rising quickly in the Court of the Rogue where men and women lived by their wits and cunning. He was absolutely certain he could handle a school that looked so very soft.

He gave him a shrug and self-deprecating smile. "Y'can't go in expectin' failure now, can ye?"

He had a point. It sounded like something her mother would have said, which meant that she sort of agreed even if she didn't like hearing it.

"I sort of did," she admitted after a moment, "but then I decided that I should just go for it."

She shrugged.

"I managed to meet people without turning into a blubbering ball of nerves," she said.

He got a crooked smile from her.

"Met you, didn't I?"

She shook her head with a quick laugh.

"Not yet, no."

He handed the phone back to her, not having forgotten it was in his hands but reminding himself that it oughtn't stay there.

"Then I count this meetin' as a success," he teased. "An' I don' think yer so much wi' th' nerves. "Or it doesn' show at least."

She took it back, slipping it into her bag.

"That's because I'm not in that mess."

She pointed at the crowd.

"...that too," she said, not startled by what he'd said, but as if she was just realizing another part of why the assembly sort of bothered her.

He shrugged lightly, giving her a crooked smile, and it wasn't like George Cooper of all people could talk against others concealing their true feelings, but it still seemed odd. "P'raps it's jus' puttin' on the' good face for th' new arrivals?"

She shook her head then before opening her mouth, closing it, and finally sighing out.

"Other than me earlier, probably not. Everyone here is pretty nice. Nicer than I'm used to, anyway."

"So next time I meet ye, you'll be a cruel an' heartless lass?" George asked. He nodded, processing the information. That probably meant they'd be nicer than he was used to too given the whole Rogue situation. "I suppose I couldn't be complainin' about that. Be stupid to bibble about people bein' nice."

Even if it was weird.
