Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

Fiona couldn't help looking at Elle. She looked... so very much like her aunt Dallas.

The dog was new, though.

Elle looked back and raised her hand, waving at the other girl. "Hi!"

...sounded a bit like her too.

"Hi," she said, venturing a little closer.

"New?"

"Yes! I'm Elle Woods and this is Bruiser Woods, but aw, the little fellow is all tuckered out. He's been getting super amounts of attention today! Are you new?" Elle didn't remember seeing her on the bus this morning, but there were many that she failed to meet.

Fiona shook her head.

"Not new. Well, new but I came last term. Earlier in the summer."

She held out her hand for a shake, her smile a little dull but she was trying. It was harder to pull up positive emotions when the nervousness was there.

"Fiona Post. It's very nice to meet you. Both."

Elle stood and her perkiness was obvious in her handshake and easy smile. "What a pleasure it is to meet you, Fiona. Would you like to sit and join me? I'd love to hear what you think of this place. Everyone seems to generally have the same opinion and weird comes up a lot." She smirked. "I can't find the weird yet so I get it. It's all about teasing the new kids!"

The girl's perkiness was infectious and even Fiona was smiling by the time she got the invitation. She sat down, careful of her dress, before listening to the rest of what she said. By the time Elle was done, Fiona was shaking her head.

"Not really. Weird stuff does happen. And some people break the traditional laws of reality" swallow "myself included. People are probably just trying to make sure you're prepared."

Crossing her legs, she grinned at her new friend because Fiona was totally her new friend. "You're totally not teasing me? I've considered cameras tucked away recording the new kids and their conversations with the established kids, then having a huge school assembly to show everyone just how gullible we can be. It would be super funny, I know."

She was reasonably sure it wouldn't be funny, but she kept that to herself.

"I'm not. Promise."

She thought for a moment before deciding that she could show her something nice instead of scaring the life out of her. Her hand reached into her purse and soon enough, pulled out the silver rose.

It was as real as a blossom picked from any rose bush, but the color of the petals was the purest silver, the light reflecting off of it ensuring it was no ridiculous paint.

"See? Bet you've never seen anything like this before."

It was hard to imagine weird. Turtle mentioned the giant mutant alligators, but Elle's brain pictured that in little boys' color books, or on TV when someone wanted to watch a super cheesy horror flick.

This would take some time to think about.

For now she concentrated on what Fiona was doing. Her gasp was delightful. "That is super gorgeous! Where did you get it?"

She held it a little closer to Elle to get a touch of the smell in her nose; the rose held touches of honey and wine in it's scent, and even Fiona couldn't help but be uplifted as she breathed it in.

"It's from my family, my mark of office, I guess. A celestial rose. You can touch it if you like."

"I would love to bottle that smell, omigod," she exclaimed, awed that such a thing even had a smell.

Gingerly she reached out to touch a petal. "How can this even be real? It's like the someone cut the silver so super thin. This must be worth a fortune and what do you mean, your office?"

"Order of the Celestial Rose," she explained.

"And it's real because, well, I guess it's magic" which she hated saying, mostly because of dealing with Arthur, "but it's real. I promise."

That sounded like a cult. Order of anything sounded like some secret society buried deep underneath piles and stacks of old vanilla folders that nobody ever is supposed to find. Wow, that was fascinating.

"That is super cool," she decided to say instead of what she was thinking. "You come from a family of magicians?"

"My family is complicated," she said with a blush.

"And it was totally news to me. Not so much cool as... weird. So, um, I was just trying to show you. Real weird. Weird is real."

"Aw, I think everyone's family is complicated in some form or another. I love my parents and have nothing to complain about, and I think magic is super cool. I've always wanted to see David Copperfield." Fiona seemed shy so Elle was being bright and friendly and perky. Her perfectly normal self!

"There should totally be another term for weird. Magic isn't weird. It's pretty!"

"...they made a play out of David Copperfield?"

She didn't know about the magician, but she'd been allowed to read critical reviews of the novel.

"Oh, I don't know. If they did, I totally haven't seen it. I wonder how they would do that because everything is so real, you know? Like a reality tv show only not because the audience is right there and he's the only one entertaining. What a strange play that would be," she rambled. "Might be worth seeing!"

"We, uh, have a theatre here on the island," she said, joining in on the rambling, figuring she'd be helpful.

"They do plays. I think they're doing The Scottish Play right now. So you know."

"Omigod, that's totally cool. Do you like the theatre, Fiona? When do they perform because I'll have to go and you can come with me! It'll be super fun!"

"Sure!"

...it was like Dinah, only faster.

"I've never actually been to one. My family had a lot of rules and there's a lot of things I've never tried. But a movie was fun."

"Yay! We'll try it together because here it will be totally new to me too," she said, feeling the need to be helpful and encouraging about everything. "They were strict? That's so frustrating when there is so much to do and see and what? A movie as in like only one? Because I might have misunderstood that seeing as everyone goes to the movies. It's the thing to do when you're a teenager."

"I had a list of 106 rules that I had to follow for my entire life until my birthday a couple of months ago," she explained, "and yes, just one. I went with my friend Griff."

There was a short pause.

"I didn't do most of the stuff you 'do' when you're a teenager."

Blink.

"Omigod that's a lot of rules. I don't want to say anything about your parents that wouldn't be harmful in a negative way but wow, that's super strict. I can't think of one rule I had, or have now."

Elle decided she was going to show Fiona everything.

"We're going to have so much fun together! We'll go shopping! And go to the salon, and do you know if they have a hot tub here? We'll totally do that too! We can have sleepovers and eat junk food and go through my stack of Cosmopolitans!"

Really infectious. Fiona was actively grinning.

"There's a hair place, and the onsen is really nice. I've been to one sleepover, and I really really like shopping. My aunt Dallas promised to take me shopping in Paris, but I got sent off to school first. But there's a few shops here and a mall not too far from here."

And she'd get to the whole 'can't eat' thing when she needed to.
