Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Tara had a plate of fruit and a cheese sandwich, and was noshing on grapes as she watched the picnic.

Spotting another person she didn't know yet, Turtle gave the girl with the cheese sandwich a wave. "Hi; one of the new kids, right?"

Tara smiled and wiped her palms on her skirt. "T- Tara. I'm a sophomore."

"Nice to meet you, Tara," Turtle said. "I'm Turtle. I'm a senior. And I've been here since I was a freshmen, so if you need anything, I don't mind at all. Where are you coming from?"

It seemed that the other girl's shyness made Turtle want to seem extra warm and approachable.

"Turtle," Tara repeated carefully, thinking it was kind of a weird name but she'd heard worse. And the girl was being friendly. "Y-you've never heard of it. I'm from this tiny little town in way northern California." Even more shyly, she added, "This was my first time on a plane."

"Oh, yeah?" Turtle asked. "How was it? Probably long if you're coming all the way from California."

Tara nodded. "I left last night and slept on the plane," she said. "M-mostly it was boring. I had to transfer in D-denver."

She added, "where are you from?"

"Wisconsin," Turtle answered with a roll of her eyes. "California's much better, but the flight is shorter, at least. I'm actually going back there tomorrow for the Fourth of July. It's a big deal where I'm from."

"I'm from the part of C-California that's mostly just a bunch of trees. We don't even have a McDonalds," Tara said with a little shrug. "Big deal? Like, a parade and a picnic?"

"Parade, picnic, big old fireworks show," Turtle said. "The whole town shows up for it. The guy who put Westingtown on the map was a huge fan of the Fourth of July."

Ooh, grapes. Leda hadn't tried any of those yet. "How are the grapes?"

"Ummm, grapey?" Tara said. She chewed and swallowed the one in her mouth. "Good! D-do you want one of mine?"

She noticed the ears but didn't say anything; she'd seen some pretty wicked plastic surgery.

"Sure thanks." She came over and took one of the grapes. "I'm Leda, pleased to meet ya."

"Tara," Tara said, surprised the girl had just taken a grape off her plate, but then, she had offered, so ... whatever. "I guess it shows that I'm new, huh?"

"Well I've only been here since the beginning of the summer, so I could have been wrong. But I didn't remember seeing you before."

"I j-just got in this morning," Tara said, shaking her head. "I'm from California."

"Oh cool! I've always wanted to go there. I'm from Bordertown. It's in the midwest somewhere."

"Where in the midwest? I just fl-flew over it."

Ellie spotted another face she did not recognize, greeting the girl with a wave and a smile. "Hi. You must be new."

"It, it shows, huh?" Tara said with a slight smile. "I'm Tara. I just got here."

It was getting easier, talking to so many people. Not easy, but easier. It helped that everyone had been nice so far.

"Nice to meet you, Tara. I'm Ellie," she replied. "I was a newbie just a few months ago."

She remembered how overwhelming it had been.

"Do you really get used to it here?" Tara asked wistfully. "Hi, Ellie."

"I think this place grows on you. It's kind of weird, but I like it," Ellie admitted. "So much that I'm thinking about staying beyond the summer."

"Wow," Tara blinked. "I know I'm really going to miss my mom in two months. I'm just here for camp for now."

Ellie nodded. "I get that. I've got family at home that I miss sometimes."
