Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were even more tents on the other side of the lawn.

Yes, the tables and chairs that had been set up there were still close to the ice cream.

Priorities are very important here at Fandom High.

"Turtle," Tara repeated carefully, thinking it was kind of a weird name but she'd heard worse. And the girl was being friendly. "Y-you've never heard of it. I'm from this tiny little town in way northern California." Even more shyly, she added, "This was my first time on a plane."

"Oh, yeah?" Turtle asked. "How was it? Probably long if you're coming all the way from California."

Tara nodded. "I left last night and slept on the plane," she said. "M-mostly it was boring. I had to transfer in D-denver."

She added, "where are you from?"

"Wisconsin," Turtle answered with a roll of her eyes. "California's much better, but the flight is shorter, at least. I'm actually going back there tomorrow for the Fourth of July. It's a big deal where I'm from."

"I'm from the part of C-California that's mostly just a bunch of trees. We don't even have a McDonalds," Tara said with a little shrug. "Big deal? Like, a parade and a picnic?"

"Parade, picnic, big old fireworks show," Turtle said. "The whole town shows up for it. The guy who put Westingtown on the map was a huge fan of the Fourth of July."

"That sounds really American," Tara commented. "You like it?"

"It's, like, super-duper ultra-American on crack," Turtle agreed, "but I love it. It's so much fun, and, really, I love America. Capitalism and democracy are two of my favorite things."

That ... was a sentence Tara had never heard in that order from someone more or less her own age, and she blinked a few times at Turtle as she tried to see if she was being sarcastic. It didn't seem like it.

"Yay capitalism and democracy?" she tried, since it wasn't like she had anything against those things.

Turtle grinned faintly; she was used to that kind of a pause. "And I think," she offered something maybe Tara could relate to better, "the other favorite thing is chocolate."

Ah, chocolate, the universal language of teenage girls. "I like chocolate," she agreed rapidly. "My big sister, Adora? She, she told me they don't even have it at home for her. It's sad."

"Are you serious?" Turtle asked. "That girl seems like she's on a constant sugar high and you're saying they don't even have chocolate? And people say this place is weird."

Tara giggled, bringing a hand in front of her mouth. "She's super-sweet? But really, uh, blonde," she said.

Never mind that Tara had bleached streaks through her sandy hair. "But yeah. I think she was sad I knew what it was."

Hey, there was completely a difference. "Totally blonde," Turtle agreed emphatically with a nod of her head. "You're right, though, she's sweet. And she shouldn't be sad, that just means you have to help her appreciate the fact that she has it now, right?"

"I could take her out and find a flavor she hasn't had before," Tara suggested. "Like a thank you for being my fake sister."

"Thanks," Tara smiled. She was feeling more secure about this school.
