Since the area with all the informational signs was bound to get a bit clogged up, even more tables and chairs had been set up on the lawn, in a slightly different spot.

"It was a short trip," she sighed. "You're looking better there, by the way."

"Yeah?" She was kind of worried about this other her, considering the other other her and all. "Did you give her a hug like I asked? Did things go okay for you?"

"I did, and she looked at me funny for a bit," Jaina assured her. "It went o- It went. Against all odds, it was a successful mission, let's say that."

"Bet she wasn't expecting that." Mind you, if Jaina hugged her, she'd probably not expect it either; still, Tahiri was amused. "And good. About time things started going right. Anyone interesting in the new bunch so far?"

Jaina still wasn't ready to say that things were going right, but they had at least done what they'd set out to do, which was the important thing. It just happened to come on the heels of other successful operations. "I haven't been too social. I have a new little sibling and a roommate, neither of which I planned on, but they seem okay. I'm rooming with Ender's sister."

"You not being too social, when is that a surprise?" Tahiri asked as lightly as she could. "My little sibling is a kriffing jerk -- Ender's sister is here?"

"Valentine. Hopefully Ender knows about it," she shrugged. "Who's your little sib?" In a way, it was kind of strange thinking of Tahiri as not being the little sib.

"Alex Karev." A distasteful look crossed Tahiri's face. "I can't decide if he's the kind of guy the Wraiths would love or hate."

"Not that I know of." Tahiri frowned. "So they probably wouldn't have much use for him."

"Yeah, then it can go either way," she considered. "Maybe he'll mellow out from being a kriffing jerk right away?"

"If he doesn't, someone's going to beat him black and blue in the gym," Tahiri predicted. "How's your little sibling?"

"Good, so far," she said. "His name's Virgil, he seems friendly enough... Fandom seems to be being fairly nice to me. It's not right." She honestly thought the island hated her specifically most of the time.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," Tahiri advised. "It's probably picking on other people for a little while."

"Maybe it can come back to me if and when I graduate." She liked this thought.

"That's a long way off," Tahiri noted, in a tone that implied it could stay that way.

"A year," she pointed out. Not that Jaina was sure she'd stay that long. A year actually didn't seem that long here, but when that was two years back home...

"A lot can happen in a year . . . and what do you mean if?" Tahiri asked.

Jaina shrugged. "I'm not entirely sure I'm going to stick around after the summer," she admitted. "Too much going on back home that I'm missing. It all depends on what happens the next couple months, I think."

Tahiri didn't look a little crestfallen about that possibility. Really. "I guess it drives you crazy being out of the action as much as you are already."

Another shrug. "I went nearly a month desperately playing catchup because things kept happening here. And when John goes, my excuses to stay run pretty thin. Three months here is about six months back there, though, and a lot can happen in that time."

"Tell me about it. Every time I get an update I practically get a headache trying to process it all, and I don't have half the responsibilities you do." Still not looking unhappy with the prospect, really. Really.

Tahiri managed a slight grin. "Good, because now that Gavin's gone I have to bug you about flying stuff."

Jaina opened her mouth, then remembered that her Tahiri had her own squadron now. "That's probably not a bad idea."
